bolt on 06 stang vs ls1 (at track)

the never ending argument

Ford's 281 = 1.07hp/cube
GM's 346 = 0.92hp/cube.
so, 1.07 > 0.92 right? So the 281 must be a better engine!
But 320 > 300, so the 346 is a better engine!!
LESS FILLING!!! TASTES GREAT!!!!
The only way to honestly compare is stock-for-stock. After that, all bets are off. And even stock-for-stock has its limitations: does a stock 98 ls1 really compare to a stock 68GT500? Where do you draw the line there? How many years of difference makes a difference? And seriously, boys and girls, which would you rather own? An out of the box mid-13 second 98 t/a or camaro or an icon that "only" ran 14.8's according to the historical Motor Trend tests? Be as honest as this: I know I'd trade my 95 stang for a stock as hell 69 ss camaro ANY DAY!! Cuz I'm a car lover...
BUT, chevy has almost always won the stock-for-stock battle, which is really the only way to compare and have a sound basis for argument. And I've said it many times: gm got it right with the ls1. That engine is the TRUTH!!!! Stang guys whine about the ci difference. A legitimate beef, but that's not gm's fault - Ford should make the fight fair, but they don't from the factory!!! Would a 5.4L or a 5.8L N/A Mustang run with an ls1? Now we're talking ci fairness: 331/351 vs 346. SURE it would!!! But Ford doesn't do that, so we Stangboys need to shut up about it!! I've never understood that about FoMoCo: they always seem to leave a little crack in the door for GM to step through. Why not give the s197's 330-350hp from the factory? What's that going to hurt? Cause those new maros I just bet are going to sporting 400+ hp when it's all said and done!
But the instant you put a lid on em, catback, U/D pullies, long tube headers, spray, whatever, then Ford versus chevy takes on a different look - it's run whatcha brung, be cool when you win and don't make punkass excuses when you lose. Should a heavily bolted on Mustang be proud of running mid-13's and taking down a stock ls1? Not any more than a sprayed, low 11 ls1 is of whipping the snot out of an overmatched bolt-on Stang. Neither is a real basis for comparison on the ls1 vs the world arguement. A kill is a kill is a kill. Run whatcha brung. Heck, my H/C/I Stang just got pwnt by a cat-back ls1. I don't like it and I think I've got something for my buddy spec, but I ain't whinin about it or making excuses. I got walloped. Well, maybe whinin a little bit cuz my feelings got hurt, but who the fark actually LIKES losing? Show me somebody who doesn't complain about losing and I'll show you an a-number one, firstrate loser.
The only thing worth arguing about is stock-versus-stock, and really, is that worth e-arguing over? It's silly. BUT, gm consistently wins that because the ls1 is a great engine. But the Mustang is an ageless classic, with an unbroken lineage to some of the greatest cars ever made, and if you guys would take a break from acting like God the Almighty Himself hand crafted the ls1 for a few minutes and give Stangs their historical mad props as car lovers and not regularly and routinely bash them, things would probably go smoother.
But I know that's asking a lot. We make easy targets. Stang guys are jealous of ls1 power, and ls1 guys are jealous of the fact that the Mustang is one of the most beloved and iconic cars ever made. It'll never end. Hey, at least we're on the same side of the pond!!!!

With now in 2003 the Mach 1 vs the LS1 is a drivers race.
Bottom line is in N/A form nothing beats cubes. Plain and simple. If you step back and look at it from an engineering standpoint.. to get a 3600lb car to trap 103 with a 281 cubic inch motor is pretty good. Its the chassis that the mod motor is in that's the problem. The 5.0's were quick cause they were in 2800lb shells. Put that 281 in a coupe and see what it runs. I bet it would out trap the "touched by God" motor. I just wish ford would have atleast kept the cubes at 302 when they went modular but oh well. -Mark

That's what I'm talkin' bout.
Too many different ways to look at it. From an ls1 perspective, what if your 66 coupe had a ground pounding, fire-breathing 434 ci 5.8L stroker? You better make the trade. If it was a rust bucket with an inline six, give me a 99 camaro any day.
