That sucks for the stang. I remember the first week i had my Z-28 w/ 2.73's (bout 4+ yrs ago). There was a crew of Mustangs that came out from L.A. to race in Lancaster. Well i ended up racing him and i pulled him up top by 3-4 cars. He was cool about it but never came back to meet his friends. hahaha.
That was the day i figured out that mustang were slow. He had all those mods and i still beat him by a good margin while my only mods were LCA's and 16" nittos.

I love the look of 99 - 04 mustangs, but I worked for a local dodge/chrysler/nissan dealer, I drove 3.5 Altimas, and Maximas all day(which are pretty freaking quick with the 6 speed), then in came a Mustang GT(auto). I'm thinking well this should go pretty good. I jumped on it in the parking lot, from a stop, just to see a little acceleration, the Nissans had that thing beat by a long shot.

Worst mod list ever..
Also, don't think every GT you race will be as slow as this guys, there is still some guy with a lid and exhaust LS1 out there that owes me $20 after he gave me a car and I beat him by three.
(No driver excuse either he had an auto)

Yeah my kid brother has a 3.8 5spd firebird that actually surprised me one day when he left a 96 or 97 gt with a five speed. We got caught at a light and I was like you better not it's a gt and he said "and your point? watch this!!"
