Default Tips for recording a good video?

I can edit just fine. I want to get that out of the way. I need some pointers on recording a good in car street video. I have seen plenty with the windows down that were fine, others had horrible wind noise. Some have the windows cracked etc. Is a lot of it in the camera quality itself? I don't want to go out and have some good races with a shitty video to show for it. Any advice from experienced camera guys would be cool.

Allot of people just change the mircophone of the camera and then there fine. Or you could just make yourself a cover for the microphone. Then you wont hear the annoying wind sound!

Simple solution is to wrap your mic with some cheese cloth and then stick a sock over that. A cheap easy way to get rid of the wind noise and believe me it works.

I agree with the ideas above, I'm impressed with the Cheese cloth and sock idea. I have used some foam taped over the on camera mic of a palm corder, but mostly to reduce sound energy, the palm corders are very poor at dealing with to much sound energy. Happy taping

Thanks I'll have to try the cheese cloth trick. I'm trying to bum one of my buddies brand new HD cameras. He payed like $1400 for that thing... HD vids would be sweet though.

What brand and model is your buddies camera? It might have 2 channels for the mic in which case you can set channel 1 for a low setting and channel 2 for a higher setting, that way if one channel gets blown out you can cut it in the editing and use the other channel.

I'm pretty sure that's it. I'm gonna have to get him drunk to agree to let me borrow it. And no, he won't ride along to film anything himself because he is a *****.

Dont let the guy that talks the entire time hold the camera...it can ruin some good runs. Be able to properly use the zoom in/out feature and have a STEADY hand. Nothing sucks more than shakey video!!

Its also good for the camera car to be able to somewhat keep up with the racers.
Example...a stock GT mustang is not a good camera car for a bolt on SS and a H/C Firehawk!

FWIW: The bolt on camaro pulled on the h/c firehawk. +2 for the driver mod!

Jeez, what kind of friend doesn't want to ride in a fast f-body? The camera he has doesn't have the 2 seperate channels for the mic. The mic on that model is located under the lens, if you were to convince him to let you borrow the camera you could take some of the cheese cloth, fold it over several times, cut it and a piece of a old sock and tape it over the mic. You could also try a piece of foam but that won't work as well at cutting down the wind noise, I have a mic attached to a boom pole for my camera that has a foam piece that slides over the mic and when it's windy out I have to use the cheese cloth and sock over the foam to cut down the wind.

If I lived in SC I would bring my gear and go for a ride with you then you could put up some movie quality clips of your runs.

Hey Josh did anything happen with the STI and the skittle the other night? I wouldn't think of letting Barlow (the guy who talks the entire time) tape anything. As for my friend that won't ride along with me... His mom was killed in a car wreck a while back so he is a complete ***** about going over the speed limit. I will be trying the cheese cloth trick though.

Damn that sucks, I can't say as if I blame him. I'm alot more cautious of my actions on the street now after watching and having a couple friends die either from racing or other peoples inability to pay attention. Although I still run her trough the gears when the time is right.

Same here. Seems we have 2 or 3 High school students (3 AAAA high schools in my area) from each school die in a car wreck every year. SC has some of the highest road fatality rates in the country.
