I saw this a while back and someone said that it was a nitrous back fire and only F-ed up the lid. I think I would have soiled my pants if that happend to my car.
Just happened to me last week on the freeway. Not a fun site to pop your hood on the emergency lane and see your filters burning when all you have to put them out is half a Gatorade bottle 
oh some of those comments one there are such idiots. "haha V8 can't rev above 4K" ... morons.
Looks more like it just blew the airbox off, not the engine itself. Not saying the engine couldn't be damaged from it but the whole boom came from the airbox.

that was when I first put the TNT kit on...150 hp hit IIRC...
After switching from a compucar to TNT setup I went lean on a freeway run....best guess is that it hurt a few plugs but I didn't realize it....
Just thinking that I had a lean problem only, I swapped out the fuel pump that night for a 255 lph deal and put it on the dyno and had an erratic/late firing in one cylinder causing the backfire...after the backfire, pulled the plugs and found some melted plug straps...ouch
Long story short...it popped the lid and fried the MAF...no real damage otherwise...drove it home off the dyno actually
