The Best V8 Stories One Small Block at Time
-Drive like a Grandma. Sure, it's fun to mash the gas...but if you want to save gas it isn't very frugal.
-Don't mash the gas only to have to mash the brakes at the next light. Remember, you've already spent money to get that car up to speed. By not paying attention to the traffic lights ahead of you and pushing on the brakes you have just thrown that money away. Time the lights so that you're still moving when you get to it.
-Don't let the people behind you intimidate you into speeding up. They'll go around when they can't stand it any more. Screw 'em.
-Get over people passing you. It's ok, you don't need to feel bad about it.
-Get over having to be the first in line at the light. It's ok, you don't need to feel bad about it.
-Coast down hill when you can. A steady foot on the gas to keep a particular speed uses more fuel than simply letting your car coast. The cruise control is terrible about this.
-If you drive a stick, flick your shifter into neutral on a downhill and put it back in gear with a quick engine rev to synch it all back together. It takes a little practice but it becomes natural after a little while. If you drive an auto, simply let off the gas and let it coast.
-Winter is coming up. Sitting idling will waste gas. Start the car and drive away. Don't get on it until it's warmed up some, but there's no need for extended idling. Also, the car will warm up faster than sitting in the driveway.
You don't have to give up enjoying your gas pedal forever, but these are the things to do when you want your gas money to go farther.

But all that will be sure to save you gas though. I guess I'm either not that old yet or gas really isn't expensive enough yet!
It just all depends on how motivated you are to save on gas money.
When you old enough to not have to drive like a teenager all the time, these things will still be valuable.
Until then, good luck with cops, tickets, insurance, accidents, and tire bills.
I've probably gotten more than a ticket a year for the past 12 years but hey that's just part of it. We have speed limits in this country for those that need them and for those that don't. None of those are on my record nor should they be in my opinion. My insurance has only decreased because of a perfect driving record and no accidents. Tires aren't cheap but if you're not doing crazy burnouts they last a reasonable amount of time. When I want to save a little gas and wear and tear on my LSX vehicles I drive a four cylinder but still don't baby that one either.
You posted some good gas saving tips that should help out a lot for those looking to save a few MPG. I just hope I don't ever have to employ all of those techniques and drive just like that!
