Default Pinging

HELP! Ok i tried the race fuel trick. (stupid me!!! destroyed my o2s and my cats!!!!) But the pinging still exists so I took it to have it checked for exhaust leaks and it came back clean. I have posted a video/audio clip of the car on startup. You can hear the ping very clearly. I was told today it maybe a bad oil pump. I am completely stumped on this one.

Thanks guys!!!!

You killed your cats and O2's? Sounds like you used leaded race gas,you need to use unleaded race to check for pinging.

Yeah my guess is it was leaded. But i dont think this is normal pinging. I do see 4 degrees of knock and some smaller amounts during normal driving. The pinging above happens when i start the car and during driving, but does not match when im getting knock. (according to efilive5) I have posted a csv for the knock side at http://www.acinfo.org/mike/RaceFuel9142003.csv

Could be a collapsed lifter. Pinging doesn't usually happen while idling. Is your car a M6 or an auto. Have you done the dreaded miss shift lately, could also be bent pushrods. Hope this helps. Please post mods.

Thanks Mike.... Havent missed a shift. This noise has been hangning around for several months, but appears to be getting worse. Here is the info. Did you hear the noise im talking about in the audio/video file in the first post?

Car Spec/Mod

2000 Transam/A4 (30K miles)
Borla Catback Exaust
160 Thermo (fan on/off adjusted accordingly)
B&M Tranny Cooler
TB Bypass
Whisper Lid and K&N Filter
US/Strange 3.73 Gears
SLP Smooth Bellow
New NGK T55 Plugs gaped at .050
Still has stock tune (i have ls1edit, but wanted to get rid of this noise first)

Thanks,

Mike

arent you still under warranty? just a thought but you probably could take it to the dealer and see what they say...its not like you have tons of mods...and none of those should give you knock.

I didn't hear a knock (during start up)in your clip. Maybe some piston slap at idle, which every car I've started does(12 and counting)You can clearly hear mine at 1100-1500 RPMs
My 2001 TA pings under a load (so did my 2000 SS and my friends 2002 Z28), so I'm going to do the PCV mod.
Let me know what you come up with, I think we have the same issue.

Yeah I have the new ls6 engine valley cover and intake that I will be installing as well, but I would think that running race fuel would affect that. Mainly because with the pcv and oil issue i am guessing the result is lower octane gas and thus detoniation. The car makes the clinking noise under load (cant here at WOT, but my borla is wide open). If you have the car started and up in the air, the clicking sound like it is coming from the oil pan. Definitely louder UNDER the car than from the top. I was told to try race fuel, intake cleaner, check for exhaust leaks, possible o ring, bent pushrod or collapsed lifter. I am getting ready to do some engine work anyway, so i may just look at the pushrods, but the lifters are a heads off deal (it would appear). Ill let you know what I find. I am hoping someone can listen to the sound and give me a "oh yeah thats the ...... "

Sounds just like mine and a lot of Ls1s. My wife's '91 GT 5.0 motor with 140,000 miles on it is quieter than my Ls1.
