I was told to do this when I had a vacuum leak but it didn't work, there was no change in pitch. I tried spraying it into the intake and it still didn't change. So I used starting fluid and found the leak really quick. If you can't get a change in pitch from spraying around the intake you might double check by spraying it into the intake(behind the MAF so you don't risk harming it) or trying starting fluid. I wouldn't do this on a super hot engine though

TPS should be it. Its a really cheap sensor and takes 10 minutes to change.

If that isnt it then the MAF might be dirty or oily from a filter.

Clean with the appropriate cleaner or very carefully with cotton swabs and alcohol.

that happened to me after school once because i left the fog lights on and it drained the battery. it barley started then started doing what yours did. without giving it any gas the car would go 40 miles per hour.
once the batteries charged up i turned it off and started it again and it was fine.

I'd say start off with the easy stuff. Have the battery tested at autozone or some other parts store. Also try cleaning the MAF wires (carefully). Mine did somewhat of the same thing for a while. It would dip real low while idling or it'd stay high. Had to Jump it one night and it stayed idling at 3200 rpms. Ended up being the battery on mine. I don't have a MAF on my 98 so that wasn't a possibility for me.
