Default Hypertech programming for dummies... lol

Hi all... I have an automatic (A4) 99 T/A with Borla catback, 3.75 gears, Volant Air System, and a few other goodies that I am using a Hypertech Tuner to tune through plugging into the OBDII. When it asks if I want to set my **** points, what shoud I answer? It's got a rang of -4mph to +4mph for 1st-2nd, -6mph to +6mph for 2nd-3rd, and -9mph to +9mph for 3rd to 4th. Also, it asks things like if I want to change my shift firmness (25%-100%) and what I want the rev limiter set for (currently it's at like 6500 out of 7000 MAX)... I thought that setting the rev limiter only would really come into play for manual transmission, but what do I know...lol. Anyone who can shed some light on these options, please tell me what you've chosen or think the best choices are. Thanks!

You want to punch in your new gear ratio to fix the speedo. With stock valve springs you dont really want to rev much over stock 6200rpm's. Stock shift points are 6000k I think. You should be save with 6100 shift points with a limiter of 6300. 50% on the firmness. If your tranny is getting tired and is going past the shift points and hitting the limiter on wot shifts, you will need to set the shift points a little sooner like 6050.

Are the shift point changes for WOT conditions only? I changed my 1-2 shifts up about 2 MPH on most part throttle points, and 3 MPH on WOT. I did similar for 2-3.

It should do some small changes for part throttle driving to get some better economy. I had a 2001 truck with a 4l60E and a hypertech, It changed the part throttle shift points as well as the WOT points. I'm not sure if they are the same for the f-body.

so... the guys at Hypertech said to go with 1-2 +3mph, 2-3 +6mph, and 3-4 +9mph... Tried it and am stalling in 63-64k range for 2 seconds or so before it shifts. No good. Might try 1-2 +2mph, 2-3 +3mph, 3-4 +4mph and set my rev limiter back to stock. Let everyone know how this turns out after my lunch break... lol.

leave the shift points alone, set limiter to 6200, firmness to 50 percent. and set your gear ratio and tire height correctly. whatever you do dont put the junk *** "performance" tune in your car

So you're saying I shouldn't change the shift points at all?

Is it dangerous to set the transmission shift firmness to 100% or even 75%? Someone once told me the more pressure you put on the transmission lines using that feature, the longer the transmission will last. The whole reason I got the tuner was so I can figure out some way to make the tires bark when shifting 1-2 or even 2-3. Currently I have new iridium NGK Plugs with MDG Wires, Volant Air Box, Borla Fully Adjustable Catback Exhaust, Ram Air Hood (not fully functional with the baffle removed yet b/c I'm afraid of water getting on the Volant Air Filter and sucked into the engine), 3.73 Richmond Gears, and soon hopefully a ported t/b. Everytime I tune with the Hypertech tuner, I end up going into the red for a second or two before it decides to shift, or sometimes I'll set it up and have the tires barkin like a junkyard dog on the 1-2 shift, but then a crappy 3-4 shift. Still lookin for some ideas and suggestions... Thanks!

Jsteele - tried your setup today and seemed abit laggish in the 0-60 area... might just be cause your setup is different han mine. Thanks for the advice though (SAME GOES FOR EVERYONE WHO'S TOSSED ME THEIR 2 CENTS ON THIS SO FAR!)

The guys at hypertech (after talking at leanght withtheir tech support again today) say that since I have an automatic, I should set 100% definitely have the rev limiter all the way up to 6600 and that way I can change my shift points. He also decoded their way of doing things for me. +2 mph on 1-2 means it will shift at 6250-6300rpm. +4 seconds means it will shift lafter while +1 means it will shift a hair earlier. If you want it to shift earlier than stock, set it at -1 or -2 (or -3.,-4,or -5 etc). So now.. armed with that knowlege, what are the best places to set your shift points at in relation to rpms for 1-2, 2-3, and 3-4?

chirping 2-3 you'll probably want to set -1, -2, -2. from the info you placed here I'd say the -#'s will make it shift quicker add that to a 80-100% firmness and you should be ready to rock.
