Default Stock thermostat

I read in my owners manual that LS1 fbody came with a 180* stock. 3.8 with 195. Yet my gauge reads around 210 usually. Is the cooling system not that great or what?

i believe you have a dummy temp gauge, so it won't show the actual temp down to the degree. I believe yours is fine.

Jim, The thermostat only sets the temp at which coolant flow begins. Not what the ultimate temp will be. Many things factor into that. 210 is a common running temp for LS motors. The LS2 in my Elky rarely sees 200.

The size of the radiator, CFM of the fans, what temp the fans come on at among other factors will set the ultimate temp.

2 X on the dummy temp gauge. My Hawk runs just under 210 all the time despite of driving conditions. Just gotta a gauge cluster out of a 98 T/A so I can do the mod I've seen here to get a true reading without adding aftermarket gauges.
