Question factory wiring measurement?

I'm confused. At the beginning of my service manual's wiring section, there is a legend that explains the wiring diagrams:

The number on the left side of the color is said to be the wire gage. But I thought most wiring in cars were in gages 10-22?? In the service manual's wiring, I see the wire gage at .5, 1, .8.

So what exactly is that measurement in?

Thumbs up I think I got it now

Apparently the gage number in the service manuals are written in metric square millimeters. The gauge number you normally find in the hardware store or auto parts store is AWG (American Wire Gauge).

I'm not sure how to do the conversion, but I found some links that had charts:

http://www.ratwell.com/mirror/sfraser/vw/wires.html

I'm 90% sure I'm correct, but any wiring gurus out there feel free to chime in and correct me! Hope this helps someone.
