Default Normal Temperature on LS1 camaros

Hello all I just started asking questions about my 2002 Camaro SS got some good advice on a lid and warranty so far. I have another question which I am sure has been talked about before. What is the normal operating temperature of LS1 cars mine stays about right under 210 while driving then at idling for 5 minutes or so goes to about 215 or so then the fans kick on and goes back toward 210. Is this perfectly normal and should I expect it all the time? Just trying to learn as much about these cars as possible thanks.

The '99 and up gauges aren't that accurate - what you're describing is normal with the AC off.

Thats normal. My car runs 170 with the stock thermostat and I changed the fans to come on at 160. My brothers 97 TA runs 210 all the time. It over heated a few times, and it was a bad switch on the fans.

yeah that's normal... mine sits right at 210 maybe a hair over at idle in traffic... if i'm driving for a period of time and not having to stop at lights it will go down to about 170-180

Are you sure that your thermostat is stock?
It sounds like you have a 160 degree thermostat.

BTW, my coolant temperature stay pretty much just
like the OP's. I'm pretty sure that is normal.

just an fyi the 99+ engine temp gauges are dummy gauges and sit at 210 no matter what. unless the car is over heating. i know this because i have an aftermaket gauge and it shows the right temperature.

mine is always at around 170 180 unless just sitting in traffic it has got to 200. get a fan switch cheap and keeps temps down. The ls motors do run hoter though. I also have a 98 though

So basically its normal for lsx engine to run hot? Just the behaviour of the beast?

So if you have your fans come on at 160 then there always on i assume... Wouldnt running your fans all the time just put drag on your engine because of the extra ampage going to the fans???

if you notice the guys that say anything other than 210 have 98's... as twitchtice said, they are dummy gauges in the 99+, anywhere from like 170-240 the gauge will read 210.

They really are not dummy gauges...its just that the temp gauge doesn't respond instantrly to temp changes as they6 happen. It uses a buffer to average the temp you see on the gauge. It actually just an average, so if its low it will average low...if its high it will average high. Its NOT a dummy gauge like people claim. The fuel gauge does the same thing............
