wat to buy next
I have about 300 dollars saved up and im debating on gears or ls6 intake. So far my car has a catback exhaust, and lid. Its an auto with 2.73 gears. Im trying to get the most power out of this money i have.
Also if i got gears. Im debating between 3.73s or 4.10s . The car is in an auto and i know 3.73s are the perfect gear for autos but would 4.10s be a pain. I drive the car twice a week or so around town and occasional cruise. Im just trying to make the most power with what money i have.

Unless you are very experienced in rear gear install it cost about 700-800 to have a set installed. Ls6 intake is useless unless you have at least a cam installed. Plus if your car is an 01 or 02 then you already have it. I would go with a set of nice used headers for the money or for a little more you can get coated pacsetter headers new. They're a nice bang for the buck and they make your car sound mean. But realistically gears are going to be a huge improvement over your 2.73s but it'll cost some money to get it set up right. For an automatic I would go with 3.73 gears. Now I have a friend with 4.56 gears and a stall that he daily drives with just bolt ons but gas will suffer. If you do decide to go with the gears find a good shop that has installed gears in our cars before. Ask around and get several recommendations. It could be the difference in a nice quite set up or a loose set up that howls like an alley cat.

its NOT 700-800 bucks for a gear install. the place by us that does all the big-money drag rear ends charges $250 for a gear install and they do it right. i'd say gears, you'll feel A LOT more -seat of the pants- improvement compared to other mods

I was referring to the cost of all parts and labor. Not just the price for labor on the install. Plus I could definately see it being cheaper to do the install on a ford 9" then our 10 bolt as 9"s are pretty easy compared to our setups and there is a lot more parts out there for them which makes parts cheaper.

LS6 intake is far from useless on cars with the LS1 manifold. The LS1 is pitiful and chokes off even a stock car at higher RPMs.
With an auto with the 2.73 gears, youll feel the most with 3.73 or 4.10 for sure. You really wont gain that much on the track but youll feel a hell of a lot faster.

Your not going to feel any kind of a gain with 8-10 rwhp. I went from an ls1 intake to a fast 78 intake and even with tuning tweeks I picked up hp but I never felt any more pull up top than what I had. My car was a bolt on car as well. There's not much bang to be found with an ls6 intake until further mods are made.

Here is what I would do, pull your LS1 intake off throw it on ebay, it should sell for about 150-175, you can also pull your AIR and EGR if you haven't yet because you won't need it with the LS6 intake throw those on ebay or in the sale section here for a couple more bucks. After all of that you may have enough for both gears and intake as long as you do the work yourself. Gears are not really that hard to do just need the right tools and a little knowledge that is easily found on the internet.
As far as the LS6 intake being useless or not feeling the 8-10 HP the intake only swap took .15 off my quarter mile times so its not worthless. I would stick with 3.73's unless you plan on doing a stall. Good luck and always remember to take what you hear on the net with a grain of salt.

Ok maybe I shouldn't have used the word useless when referring to the ls6 intake but for only having a lid and catback I think there are alot better bang for the bucks that the op can get first. If the op is like me then you want instant gratification. Something you can feel in the seat of your pants improvement. Something you can hear. Or something you can see that looks good. Yes your et will improve slightly and .15 improvement is actually really good especially if it is on a bolt on car with as few mods as the op. But in my experience I didn't feel the improvement in the seat of my pants. Gears, stall, headers, are all things that instill instant gratification. And maybe the places that I go for gear installs are proud of what they do so they charge more but that's the going rate around here. If you know of a good shop that will provide all parts, fluid, and labor on a gear install for $300 and they will warantee against workmanship then I say jump on that one! Good luck op. I hope this thread helps point you in the right direction.

if you say you're trying to get more "POWER" then get the ls6 intake, gears won't net you any power at all, it'll make your car pull harder no doubt but it'll just utilize the same power as your car before the mod.
8-10rwhp is not noticeable but worth the money if you want to mod your car more later on, after all we cant really feel the hp, all that the butt dyno feel is the torque
