Default LS1 Engine Drop

Can anyone shed light on how difficult an engine drop would be on an LS1 camaro with just a set of jack stands? Would it be better to disassemble the top end and then slide it out from the top? Any advice would be helpful Thanx in advance,

Nothing yet, been planning on buying a camaro after i got out of college and want to know how much trouble an engine pull would be before i bought the car. Because I know that it has to come out the bottom unless you tear it down inside the car.

Without a lift is a pain in my opinion. Yes it can be done and people do it, but from my experience I wouldn't do it as soon as you buy it unless you have too. I would go after a low mileage 01-02 Z28/SS that has been taken car of if you are that concerned about checking the motor like that. Unless you are just buying it to build it, then have at it

Remove as much as possible from the front end (bumper, supports, radiator, etc..)
Topend taken off the block (not as bad as it sounds)
Drain block of coolant for sure. Don't want fluid getting into the cylinders or bottom end for that matter.
Some tall *** jack stands (someone should be able to elaborate on that)
A dolly to be able to support the motor, and slide it out from under the car.
Tranny removed would make it a little easier possibly.

I have never done it with jackstands but am trying to think about how I would do it if I attempted it.

Yeah an engine hoist/cherry picker. I had a big beam I could have put one of those roll up chain hoist on and winched it straight up but I figured the cherry picker would be easier. You can buy them brand new for $200. In a project of that magnitude, whats another $200 added in? And you will always have it or could resell it.

I cant really say exactly.....I already had the tranny out. If I could estimate, pending no issues with removing anything I dont see why you couldnt completely remove it in a full day.

Ive heard that all that needs to be unbolted is the sway bar and the shock tower bolts..unless your pulling the trans out with it..then its the trans mount and driveshaft. am i right

just the thought it put in my head.

Unbolting the master cylinder from the brake booster to get to the driverside rear shock tower bolts. Disconnect the 2 front brake lines from the ABS box, and remove it's heat shielding, so they will drop. Disconnect the steering knuckle. Pull every sensor not attached to the motor for sure, and disconnect the PCM. Or disconnect every wire that is on the motor and get them out of the way including starter(<<<pain in the ***). It's easier to just pull every other sensor and body grounds. There is a little more to it than that, but that is the main stuff.

I saw an ad for a wrecked 2000 Z-28 6 speed car on Craigs list. I had a friend go with me and scope it out. We didnt have a way to take this whole car so in a few hours we stripped it. Lifted the body off the subframe with an engine hoist and rolled the entire front suspension, engine, T 56, drive shaft and torque arm out from under the car. Then we hoisted the engine and sub frame complete with the wheels still bolted on into my beat up 1990 Ford Ranger. The man told us we were crazy as I handed him the cash. Then I had to drive 85 miles on I-95 with the front of the old Ranger floating and drifting all over the road. Good times...
