Default Lid question

Hi, just purchased a 99 Formula M6....and the first things I want to get are the skip shift eliminator and a lid. I purchased an SLP lid, and now I'm reading stories about increased silicon content in the oil (possibly from dirt). Now, I know that seals could cause that, and dirt could also. Is there any danger from running this?

I know that pretty much everybody that has an f-body on here has a lid, and I havent' heard any problems except for a few minor cases. I'm trying to keep my car for a while, so I'd rather settle for a few less HP and not take a chance on damaging my engine.

Sorry for the really noob question, just wanted to make sure before the lid shipped.

Where did you hear about this problem? I have a lid and I would like to look into this... If you do put on the lid make sure to check for proper fit and seal. I have the SLP lid. I am pleased overall, but the seal is not as secure as the stock lid, it takes some adjustment.

As far as the skip shift eliminator goes you dont have to spend the $$$$ that slp or companies on ebay want. Go to installuniversity.com and they have a writeup on how to make your own eliminator for about $2 in resistors at radioshack.

I don't remember exactly where this problem was....ls1.com? I'm not entirely sure, but I've read that there are different sources of silicon other than just dirt. It could come from the seal, which would make sense, and after a few oil changes it should completely go away.

Anyways, I figure if the seal is tight enough, there shouldnt be a problem. Went ahead with the orderS.

He is right, I read the same thing a month ago or so on this message board. Someone stated they had higher silicone after putting the SLP lid on, but then it lowered when he put the factory one back on.

I bought an SLP lid and installed it anyways. If silicon blows my engine in some twisted devious way, I will just have to buy a bigger better motor.

In reality, I am more worried about damaging my own engine putting mods on than the silicon content that may or may not happen. I am sure every engine out there is sucking up some sort of contaminent so I am not going to worry about it.

all the aftermarket lids seem to have inferior sealing against the filter. when you put it on, look around the back where the part around the neck meets the filter. i've been through a few lids and they all seemed to lack a reassuring seal.

this is a big part of why i went with the slp blackwing lid (option on ss and firehawk, not the crap slp is currently selling). back then i was trying to justify buying the blackwing lid when it went for less than half of what you see it sell for now.
you could probably correct for any potential sealing issues with some weatherstripping or something.

this is the lid im talking about

there's someone on ebay right now trying to get $425 shipped for one right now. that price is ridiculous.

Just don't go 10k miles between oil changes and you'll be fine.

It's true that the aftermarket lids don't have quite as good of a seal against the air filter on the backside near the outlet neck as the stock lid does. But many people (myself included) have had these lids on for 10s of thousands of miles without engine failure. So my feeling is that the slight increase in dirt isn't significant enough to worry about. Maybe your engine will only last 250k miles rather than 275k. Not a big deal IMO.

the lid is a good idea, also get your car tuned. It made such a huge diffrence in my car when it was stock.

Ok, this has nothing to do with a lid, but being I have a thread opened I don't want to start any more. I have the lid, P&P the TB over the winter, and i ordered the LS6 intake. Now, I really want to do true duals eventually, but I know I don't have the money for that (I have to buy brakes/tires this spring). I was thinking about getting a Magnaflow muffler for now (maybe free up a few extra HP, help with the noise a bit) and buying a used set of tips just to get rid of the stock boring ones (and use later with duals, I don't want them dumping off under the car). Would this be a worth while use of like $90 for a good muffler? I probably wont do duals for a year or so, I'm still in school and that's where most of my money is going, and I just want something to hold me over for a while.

Also, being I have to delete EGR and I want a few more horses, I was thinking about doing a mail order tune. F-body Kustoms said he got his when his car was like stock, do you think that a tune after these mods (intake, muffler maybe?) would be worth it, then just again after I do exhaust?

Thanks again for the help!
