Default do mufflers make that big of a difference?

mods are in my sig....

a friend with a bone stock (almost) 2000 Z28 and i raced a few times about a month ago... i couldnt pull on him for the life of me, i could barely stay with him...
the only thing he has done to his car is change out his muffler to a bassani...
am i THAT bad at launching or am i missing something here? he should have the LS1 intake... i have the LS6 from the factory....

There is some power to be gained going to a better flowing muffler but there won't be a tone of power. I'm guessing somewhere around 10 to the tires would be about it. If you are looking for some cheap power out of the catback, look at putting a cutout on it. They are relatively inexpensive and you can save your money up for some headers! Let me know if you have any other questions!

You have nothing done to your car that builds any real advantage over another LS1. You are gonna run even with other stockish LS1s. I had to learn this the hard way. I was LTs, ORY, catback, 3.23s racing a LT, muffler only, 2.73 car and I couldnt pull him one bit from a roll. We were perfectly even.

+1 on what everyone else said. a4 shouldn't race m6 from a roll, consider any gearing differences (are either of you 2.73, 3.23 or manual?). weight differences?

also, consider these FACTS.... 2001-2002 got the weaker cam.

1998-2000 LS1 fbody cam specs:
Duration@.050 198.86 intake 209.25 exhaust
Lift .498 intake .497 exhausts
LSA 119.45

2001-2002 LS1 fbody cam specs:
Duration@.050 196.37 intake 208.72 exhaust
Lift .464 intake .479 exhausts
LSA 115.92

All these guys are correct. You are basically stock, and with your mods you won't see noticeable pull on even a 100% stock LS1 until you've reached very high speeds (probably 90+mph). You do have a lid and ported TB, but his Z28 weighs less and Bassani makes a very good flowing muffler so there's a tiny gain there.

This is true. The reason '01-'02s are usually a tad quicker is based on the better 241 heads, higher flowing exhaust manifolds (starting in '00) and LS6 intake. If you put a '98-'00 cam into an otherwise stock '01-'02 LS1 longblock, you'd have the most aggressive possibile stock parts setup.

yeppp they switched halfway through 2000. unfortunately mine was made in early 2000 so i'm stuck with the 853's.

regarding the original question, is his car an m6 or a4? and unfortunately there is a possibility his car just runs better. my car (2000 a4) tuned with longtubes, ory, magnaflow, lid and ported throttle body dyno'd 330ish corrected. my friends car (also a 2000 a4) tuned by the same guy with longtubes, ory, magnaflow, lid, and ported throttle body, plus an ls6 intake that i don't have, dyno'd 311 on the same dyno. theoretically he "should" be making 10-15 more than me but actually makes 20 less. not a huge difference, but those extra few mods you have over him may not be putting you at an advantage. maybe try doing plugs/wires/seafoam/filters and see what happens.

Not half way. I've seen spring '00 built cars with 853s. It's mostly just the may and june of '00 cars that got them.

Thats not entirely true, I have seen original 01s come with 853 heads and ironically also, the earlier style pinion seal which was supposed to be discontinued at the end of 00.

I'd definitely beleive that. Especially with the heads, I think between 05/00 and 06/00 (still MY 00) and 08/00 (which would be MY 01) they had mixed inventory. Don't know if they built any in July of 2000, that's usually a transition and re-tooling month and often no cars are completed. I've never seen an 07/00 build date on an F-body.

Muffler will give you about 5-10 hp but just because you have the same motors doesnt mean the cars run identical...some are faster then others. Plus yea all your really have is a lid, P. TB, and the LS6 intake.

hell something as simple as a full tank of gas compared to 1/4 tank of gas will give you a disadvantage.

weight sucks
