'98s and '99s share many of the same disadvantages, however the '98s have some key advantages that you won't get with a '99, '00, '01, or '02.
Now, it's true that the '99 does have some advantages over a '98, but you can get those same advantages (plus more) in '00.
Then, of course the '01-'02 cars have some advantages and disadvantages against all other years.
So just by the process of elimination, '99s have the least desireable advantage-to-disadvantage ratio, because they have nothing better than an '00, but they lose some of the good from a '98.
None of this stuff is enough reason to not buy a certain model year though. It mostly all equals out, and I'd still buy a '99 no problem if the right car came along at the right time.

storms racing001. i feel ya man, i am new to the ls1 family. and i got an awesome deal on a, you guesses it.. 98 ls1. i've done my research and stuff and yeah 97-98 are the first ls1's gm made. i know that the very first ls1 came from a 97 corvette. then the f body was introduced to the ls1 in 98. but once you geta sweet deal on a ls1. go for it.. like everyone said, an ls1 is a ls1! i've been doing some research and yeah they do have a restrictive oiling system, and as well i heard the ecm is hard to tune.. dunno if its true. but i heard it through some pro-shops out here. but hey if you are worried about the oil, get a hi-volume oil pump and problem solved! heres a link that really gave me a overall idea of what certain ls1 engines you can consider. also i heard that 97-98 f-bodies came with a 23 lb METAL fuel tank. that was interesting. also the gauges are not as dependable on the ecm. 97-98 years were the in the werks that later on changed and made this bad-*** hunger power engine it is today . Also 99+ have WAY more support than a 97-98. like for example buying those plug and play EFI kits they sell out there like painless or even summit, they all require you to have a 99 up ecm. something to think about. thats what im going through. but i like a challenge!
ohh and im newto this community and glad to be a part of the ls1 fam!also its my first post..!

I recently bought a 98 model, only problem i've had is with the tail gate release, you have to do it twice in cold weather, but who cares. compared to the Audis i sell for a living it's so much more reliable
