It wasn't quite an actual lawsuit, but yes, they did take Castrol to court for the fact that Castrol switched it's Syntec lineup's base oil from a true synthetic base to a group 3 hydrocracked petroleum base, which is not quite as good as a true synthetic (it doesn't flow as well in cold and can't last for as long of a drain interval)

After Mobil 1 lost and they allowed Castrol to still claim their oil was fully synthetic, the other synthetic oil makers started following Castrol's lead (except for Mobil 1, Redline, Amsoil and Royal Purple and a few other specialty oils) and switched to the cheaper group 3 base oil too. This doesn't always mean the oil is bad, just overpriced for what they are giving you.

FWIW, Castrol's 0w30 Syntec, which is from Germany now, is actually a full synthetic, using a mostly ester base oil (esters are considered to be one of the best base oils to use) But Syntec 5w30, 10w30, 10w40, 5w50 and 20w50 are all using the group 3 base oil.

I've known this info for a while now, but for the latest info on oils I am also an administrator on an oil message board:

not sure if this is true or not but supposedly on high performance VW engines they say you are NOT to use a synthetic oil due to the fact that synthetic rejects heat and does not take away heat like other oils do...but then too oiling on a VW engine is pretty important considering they are air cooled...they said the oil does a good job with lubrication but rejects heat and it made the head temps go up....

I was running Royal Purple oil with no problems until i did a New Cam/Valvetrain. After that, the stuff was just burning up. I burnt 3 quarts of it in under 1500 miles. I have since switched to Redline 5W30 and my oil consumption has decreased to what it was prior to the swap. About 1 qt every 3k miles. Dont know how it protects compared to Royal purple but i do know its lasting longer.

It's Not supposed to be all that great. My buddy owns a shop and was running mobil one in his car. A rep from royal came to his shop looking for his highest HP Car which was 700 HP.... They told the shop owner that they promised him with their oil he would gain horsepower on the Dyno if not they would replace his old type of oil for free...... So he took the deal and lost 14WHP!!! They were shocked! I was there for the dyno ... they couldnt figure out what was wrong ...lol we were al laughin' .... anyways .... Just use regular oil .... waste of time and money
