Default 4th Gen F-bodies. Is there a best year?

I'm pretty well aware that 2002 is the anniversary year and is well-regarded as one of the best years of Camaro history performance-wise, but I'd like to hear some opinions on the other years (1998-2002). What should I buy for my first fourth gen? I heard 2001 is a good year...

It's like in all cars there are usually improvements every year.... the only year i wouldn't get personally would be the 98 due to block problems.. but if im not mistaken 01-02 had the ls6 intake

Whatever one you can find in the best shape, with the options you want, and the price range you are looking for.

I would not hesitate to buy any of the years. People tend to say to stay away from the 98 model year, however, my Dad has a 98 SS with a lid and aftermarket catback that felt much quicker than my 00 SS with the same mods. Yeah sure the 01-02's come with an LS6 intake, better hydraulics in the M6 tranny, but like I said, find a car in your price range with the options you want. You wont be disappointed with any of them.

LS1 is a LS1 is a LS1

Ok. Thanks a lot guys. Any kinks or problems I have to worry about past the '98 year?

There is no "block problem" with the '98s. There were just some minor improvements made to the oil passages later. A '98 block will still last 200k miles.

FYI. '98s also have some advantages over other years as well.

I'm locking this one, because there are tons of threads on this very topic, and even a full breakdown of the differences between the years in the FAQ sticky above.

These threads tend to fill up with lots of rumors, false info, bandwagoning, and useless argements (everyone wants to THINK they have the best year).

In the end, no year is "best", because each one offers different advantages and disadvantages. I know this from personal experiance as I've had every model year of LS1 F-body besides 2001. Read the FAQ links on this, and you can decide which is better for YOU personally.
