m6 with 2.73?
i just got my predator tuner in. the main reason i got it, was for the speedometer. it was way off and after i researched it for a while i figured it was due to a gear change. sence i didnt know what gears where in it, i just had to kind of play with the tuner. well i think i finally got it right, but the speedo is calibrated to 2.73 gears. as far as i know, only autos have those gears. why whould someone change the gear ratio to make the car slower? maybe the rear end went out and they swapped it. would a rear end from an a4 fit an m6? is the only diffrence the gear ratio?
next step is to get a how to on swapping rear end gears. im very happy to have a working speedo tho!!

dang what are your rpms at in 6th gear crusing at 70? i wonder if it would help mpg at all?
the rear end is the same 10 bolt and it will just bolt right in. someone def swapped it.
you can just put you some new gears in it. the only difference with the rear end is the 2 series carrier the 2.73 has while all the other factory rear ends have a 3 series carrier. i think thunder racing makes 3.42s, 3.73s for 2 series carriers.

Yea if you keep that rear you would have to get what they call a thick gear. They are a little more expensive but that's the only route to go. Unless you get a 3series rear.

Might just be a programming issue. Look at a calculator like www.f-body.org/gears Before buying anything I'd pull the cover to see what's really in there and do the math. (Example: 42 tooth ring gear, 13 tooth pinion gear - 42/13 = 3:23).

Yeah pull the cover and count the teeth. If you do have a 2 series carrier I have a set of the "thick" 3.73s that are in very good shape and have been behind an auto their whole life. PM me if you are interested.

You definitely need to do more investigation before just buying new gears. Do you have stock tires sizes? If so, post up your cruising rpms at speeds like 50, 60, 70 mph and what gear you're in. Then you can compare with other's here that have M6s.
That's the quickest thing do to, then the next step would be to pull the diff cover.

they only pt 2.73's in the first couple years of M6 LT1s that I know of, all LS powered M6's had 3.42s from the factory. You definitely do not want 2.73s in a stick car lol. You can pull the diff but you can also get under the car and spin the tire one rotation and count how many times the drive shaft turns

trust me dude, take it to a professional. otherwise youll be in my shoes; sitting here reading forums with my Z on blocks and the rearend at a tranny shop because i tried saving 100 bucks by doing it myself. also, alot of 3rd gen cars came with 2;73 gears. and a rear end from 82-02 will innerchange. more than likely the previous owner snatched on it and tried to get out cheap by going to a junktard for a rear end

Dont let guys like this talk you out of it. Everyone starts somewhere, as did I. The first rear 10 bolt I ever rebuilt is still running like a champ with no issues behind an M6. And it does see the track. Every 10 bolt I have ever rebuilt including my own is purring like a kitten. Here's some help. Read and understand it all before you turn a wrench.

i had 2.73s in my m6. i broke a rear and found something to roll around on for a a week or two till i had another rear for it. if i remember correctly, i hit 60 in 1st 100 in 2nd and 130-140 in 3rd, 4th gear would bury the needle, and 6th gear at 50 was like 800-900 rpm lol

Put the back of the car in the air.
Put a chalk mark on the DS and one on the tire.
Put the car in neutral and count the revolutions of the DS for one complete revolution of the tire.
Roughly 2 3/4 = 2.73 3 1/4 = 3.23 etc..... IMO figure out for sure what you have first....

You are an idiot and look for a pathetic arguement in every thread you post in. Most shops charge 2-300 for gear swaps. You can aquire a 12 or 20 HF press for less then half that on sale. Beam style inch/pounds for about $60 on ebay all day. Dial indicator with magnetic base isnt much either. Less then $300 and you keep the tools. So
just because your supertech and your perfect at everything you do doesnt mean everyone else is. take your BS elsewhere, because id rather tell him to take it to a professional insted of his car sitting in his driveway with a rear end in a shambles because some dumbass conned him into trying it himself.
if you want to learn how to do gear swaps, do it on a rearend that doesnt belong in a car you want to drive, because the chances of you ******* something up is greater than a professional ******* it up.
