Default Another pathetic question: 5.3 vs 5.7

I've ran across plenty of LS engine blocks that are 5.3L but they say can become 5.7L. Is it an aluminum block that can be bored out to 5.7L? Or are we talking stroking it to 5.7L. Also, a truck 6.0L is the engine physicall bigger or is it bored out more?

there are iron 5.3's and aluminum 5.3's both can be bored to 5.7L specs. 5.3,5.7, and 6.0 share the same stroke crank. 6.0 block physically the same size but has a bigger bore

So why were the engine's originally 5.3L? Is that what they mean by GM detuning the engines? Can I just bored out a 5.3 aluminum to the 5.7 and have a LS1? Are there any catches I'm missing here?

No, that's not "de-tuning." What most people consider de-tuning is when GM says, for instance, the 'Vette makes more power than the F-Body. in reality, that's just marketing -- they both make the same power. I know a lot of people complained about the GTO and the new automatic Camaro's tune, but that's a different story.

As to why they make a 5.3, I have no idea. It must save GM money in the long run, but I can't imagine it saving that much. But, if you save $1 on each vehicle of a 40,000 vehicle run, it'll make a nice bonus gift for an executive -- like having their office bathroom remodeled or something.
