Default Cam.. school me on this

My current ls1 committed suicide but I had been wondering about this a little bit. With the exception of plugs the car was completely tuned up, and it got around 13 mpg all around. But the thing made enough power to spin the tires on any surface in first (A4) and would do the same under 45mph. All the mods, that I know of, are in my sig. Is it possible it has some kind of mild cam? I didn't notice any sound like it had one, nor did I have a chance to dyno it myself. The previous owner CLAIMED w/ a fast intake and LT's it made over 400rwhp. Is it possible to have an after market cam and not know it? I will be pulling the old ls1 apart later will the cam have the numbers stamped on it if it is after market?

I'm pretty sure if he was really making over 400rwhp he had to have had a cam. Don't think anyone has gotten close to 400rwhp with just some bolt-ons (can correct me if I'm wrong).

LTs and intake alone would not be able to make 400rwhp on any stock LS1 engine. So, either you have heads and/or cam upgrades, or the previous owner was lying.

Traction is not a tell-tale sign of power. I've had 250hp cars that could easily break the tires free at 30mph, but the tires were old and bald. Even with decent tires, a stock LS1 with aggressive enough gears and/or stall can destroy tires in first gear, and spin them some at even higher speeds (my stock LS1 with 3500 stall and 3.23s would spin brand new BFG KDWs at a 40mph roll with cool pavement, car made probably 300-310rwhp at the time).

seeing you got 13 mpg there mite be a non-stock cam in your engine.there a some cams that can increase power but seem stockish.with out the right suspension pieces you can spin the tires easily with the stock cam.a aftermarket cam should have some numbers on it.don't reuse the cam if you rebuild the motor ,it could be damaged.start a new thread whats the best cam.

That idle clip sounds like an extremely stock cam to me.

That car with exception of the catback is STOCK. You still have the ls1 intake, egr, and all the stuff that suggests it is stock. Your not making anywhere close to 400rwhp. With that said, start modding

So did he remove the Fast and LT's and put the stock crap back in when he sold it to you? Im confused but seems bone stock, minus the catback haha. But nowhere near 400HP. before you reassemble I would start by getting rid of the LS1 Intake for an LS6, Race style LT'S, get rid of the EGR and Air system, plugs/wires, and frost tune + more depending on how far you wanna go internally (H/C), all depends on what you wanna do with the car, but good time to mod while your rebuilding and depending on how deep your pockets are I know on my 00 SS I did the LS6, egr/air removal, Pacesetter LT's, 3" TSP Y, frosted, plugs/wires even though they weren't bad, P&P TB, Powerbond underdrive kit, and it really woke the car up goes a lot better, just waiting to finish my H/C parts list

I'm thinking the OP was lied to from the get go.

Well, there are lots of people that remove bolt-ons prior to the sale of the car, since they know they can get more money overall that way. However, the fact that he claimed "over 400rwhp with a Fast and LTs" is impossibile if those were the only mods at the time. So it does seem reasonable to assume that he would have lied about anything/everything else as well.

I'm pretty sure it did have the fast intake on it. He said it was detuned for his now ex-wife to drive (he was going through a divorce). I'm thinking he did it to get more money in the end. The vac tube that goes to the a/c vent control from the intake was blocked off and the end that was on the hose would not fit the ls1 intake. Instead of a tube running to the ac control it looked like a plug that would go into a female inlet on the intake. I hope that makes sense. As for headers I have no clue if it had any or not. He said it was a dyno car and talked about tuning the car without the maf and with ported tb's and stuff like that. I also found an allen wrench under the ls1 intake when I took it off the other day, along with the removed coolant tube. So something must have been done.

As for my plans, one of my managers is trying to buy an 02 ss with 35k on it. Hes going to sell the motor (hopefully to me ) and drop in something bigger, lq9. I'm doing LT's and a mild cam for sure or a turbo, I'm still trying to decide. Will I have any problems in TX with the egr/air removal?
