Question hypertech programmer

I bought the hypertech max energy programmer for my 99 auto. trans am and have no clue what the best settings are for it. I found settings on here for the rev limit change and shift points but on my car it redlined before it would shift out of first gear. I went back and tried some other settings but still redlined so i set it back to stock. I also was wondering what rfg and non rfg was referring to?? If someone could give me the best recommended settings for the programmer it would be greatly appreciated.

I had a Hypertech... throw it in the garbage and get HP Tuners or at the very least a Diablo Sport Tuner. The hypertech's tuning is very limited. I don't know what to tell you on tire size. I'd go the one size up maybe. The Diablo sport can firm up your shift points to not hit the limiter before it shifts. Or you could have a trans issue.

Well thats what i thought about the trans but when i set everything back to stock it shifted fine. From what everybody tells me i should get a mail order tune by frost. Im not too familiar with it though. Im thinking about leaving computer alone and just doin stall , gears , and nitrous.

But with that said i gotta stick with what i have if somebody would tell me what rev limit i should set it at , what my shift points it should be , and shift firmness for the best performance for my "garbage" hypertech haha

something to do with California and the fuel they have in that state. youd want rfg if you live there and non rfg if not. but neither makes a difference. i tired them both out at the track. got same times with both. but email hypertech to make sure

the hypertech leaned my car out on the top which was no good. Saw these results on the dyno, picked up 5whp taking the hypertech programmer off hahaha

Lol thats funny . When i first got the programmer i set it at 6400 rev limit 1st - 2nd +3 , 2nd - 3rd +5 , 3rd - 4th +5 and shift firmness 75% i could tell a big difference it felt like it had way longer gears in it at higher speeds. When everybody else i race shifting gears i still had gearing left . I just wanted other peoples opinions on the settings if there was an ultimate set i could put it at to get optimum power

Not meaning to hijack your thread here man, but would you guys rather have a good handheld tuner, or a good PCM tune? And to the OP, i've also heard hypertechs are not that great.

i really see no reason not to get a dyno tune over these handheld POS's. think about it. they're made to work decent on a wide warriety of cars but not good for any specific car. if the average dyno tune is 400 bucks, you barely even save any money, plus you don't get a dyno graph to see what your car actually makes at the rear wheels. before i even knew what a dyno was, i had a superchips handheld on a '97 z71 back in high school and the only thing i could notice is the lack of a top speed limiter. save your money and get a dyno tune by a good shop IMO.

You won't be able to leave your car's computer alone if you change the stall, gears and add NAWZ...

On your tire size you need to select 26.75. That will be close within 1/2 to 1 mph. On the rev limiter you need to put it at 6600 and leave your shift points where they are. That should work for you because your hitting the rev limit before it shifts

Select Non RFG Tune, Turn shift pressures up 75%, set limiter at 6300 RPM, Set Top Speed at 177mph, tire size 26.75, dont **** with the shift points and this should be a decent tune and wont cause you to be hitting the limiter, i had this tuner and with this tune it worked pretty effectively, as soon as you mess with shift points and stuff all it does it **** your tranny up and make your car run worse, also if you set the limiter at 6300 it will probably go up to as much as 6500 i left my limiter set at 6200.

To be 100 percent honest though sell that bitch on craigslist for 150.00 and send your computer to Frost for a nitrous tune.

definately think thats what im doing. Ive been researching it alot lately and from what i can understand frost is definately the way to go. It will be a couple months before i slap the nitrous on due to weather. what stall , gear , and cam should i be looking at? i have a friend with 3600 stall and he loves it.. gears i was looking at maybe 373 being that we dont have a 1/4 track close to me im usually running up and down the hwy. any ideas would be helpful

thanks

I have used HP Tuners since then and it can tune pretty much every single table that can be adjusted. If your going to hook up nitrous, I'd run a wet kit with the stock injectors and make sure you have the proper timing retard for the shot your going to run. A good nitrous tune on the dyno would probably the best way to go about that. You can run bigger injectors but may not need as much fuel on the nitrous side for the fuel jet. This would also be another reason to run it on the dyno to see where your AFR's are at N/A then on Spray. Rich is safe.
