yea, my '98 with 60k does it too when cold.

our new '04 Toyota Rav4 is tapping loud as hell for a 4-banger during cold startups.

its normal.this will be argued forever but it is.we wanted a great motor from GM and we got it.with its design and engine tolerances some noises are going to occur.youre wasting your time imo having your pistons replaced.

also running synthetic with todays engine designs some oil usage is normal.not alot.but some.

piston slap and oil usage isnt exclusive to ls1s either.many engines from other carmakers have these symptoms and they still run fine.

I guess it's kinda normal for the LS1 but not so normal on LS6 engines..and that I don't get?? If I would have known my car was going to be in the condition it is now I would have NEVER spent 30+ grand on it, but I seem to have a bad, and getting worse case of piston slap. So I guess it's on you...some will last with minimal problems and some will fail over time or atleast beat the rings to death and use oil

That noise you hear is all those horses trying to get out and trample some unsuspecting ricers and stangs.

LS1 even with all the noises.

My v6 did it, swapped for the 01 ls1 it does it, and my dad's silverado does it. I wouldnt say its normal but maybe harmless.

piston slap isn't normal. if i saw a car that did that i'd run. fast.

harmless? Yeah i guess kinda like rod knock, its harmless, until something breaks apart.
We drove this truck with a loud knock for a long *** time. Till it threw a rod lol.

your dealer is a moron.... carbon build up.... hahahahaaaaahhahahaaa...
walk up to him point in his face and laugh....
what exactly is he going to soak it in???

he wants 190 bucks and your car to take his gf out on the town in a nice car
if your burning up oil it could be anything from piston rings to gaskits ....
pay 25 bucks to get a REAL mechanic to go with you to your dealer ...
tell him why he's full of it and make him fix your car ....

aaahhh i feel much better...

piston slap is common in most cars at cold start up when they have a c/r of 10/1 or better...
i dont know why but its what i have seen...
i would love to know how or why anyone thinks it is ruining the motor...

mine slaps at cold start
doesn't use a drop of oil in 2500 miles
have had oil test done several time (on my mobil one) and it always gets high marks.
i drag it and drive hard...
so what exactly should i be worryed about it breaking for???

should i be concerned that it makes a REALLY loud howling noise at WOT when i have the cut out open??? lol...

Alot of forged slug race motors slap when cold. Then again who cares if they last 100K miles? Probably gonna blow em up b4 then anyways. motors are cheap.

THAT is not normal at all...
27k you are still under warrenty.... make them pay to have that fixed...
yours has something wronge...
have you checked your valve lash?
or auto tapped it?
you are either running way lean.
using cheap gas.
or your valve train aint holding up...
either way get it fixed asap
burning that much oil too... could be bad pistin ring?

Mine does it on cold start-ups, but it's more of a clatter or ticking than a knock. Sounds more like valvetrain. It goes away after it warms up, and it uses about 1 qt every 5000 miles. If I drove the car like a granny, maybe I'd be worried. But given how often the car "stretches its legs," I don't think 1 every 5k is bad.

I don't know why people worry about using a quart of oil every two or three thousand miles. It's normal and oil is cheap. I had a 68 GTO that used a quart every 200 miles and didn't smoke. The oil use added another dollar to the cost of a fill-up, and the car still ran great. Big deal. Now, I admit, if my LS1 was using more than a quart every thousand miles, I'd be concerned.

if you go through a quart every 200 miles and dont smoke ... then you have a leak in your oil pan
or you have a 2 cycle motor that uses oil gas mix
the reason ppl are concerned is burning oil is not the problem.. its a simptom(spelling?) and it is a simptom of bad stuff...
worn or damaged piston rings valve stem rings ect ect ect...

I'm thinking a new long block is order next year.
BTW In CALI the gas does suck. 91 octane is the best you get here.
