Default LS1 Knocking when cold...normal?

Im looking into getting a 98+ Trans am, and i test drove a nice WS6 the other day, it was a 2001 with 30,000 miles. The motor was knocking when it started up untill it warmed up, the guy said they all do it. Is this true? or is it suttn i should be concerned with? Thanks a lot.

Mine does it too. I bought it with 23,000 on it last year and it's done it since then. They all don't do it, just most of them.

the 99+ cars seem to do it.

Some worse than others.

My 98, and other friends 98's don't.

Ryan.

Mine does it! It's known as piston slap if you want to look it up further in the internals section. From what I understand, it doesn't really hurt anything, it just sounds bad.

Mine make alot of noise too. A liitle valvetrain noise is normal. Does yours drink oil between intervals?

My Silverado does it bad and drinks the oil. I can't figure out how to go about taking mine to the dealers because they would just say its normal. I don't think they would just say OK to giving me a new engine as GM has all their TSBs about it to try and cover their butts.

My 99 Camaro uses a little over a quart in 3000 miles, but my 99 Silverado 5.3 didn't use any oil and I ran it just as hard.

My 98 never knocks and has never used ANY oil.Never even have to check it. 5k inbetween changes with Mobil one. It also pulls 40lbs of pressure at idle when hot.98's are supposed to have weak oil pumps but i dont see that. I have 42k on the car.

My 00 Formula w/36,000 does it when the car is dead cold and the outside temp is around 40 or below. Good ol' piston slap - sorta sounds like a diesel for the first couple of minutes or so.

My 01 Z did it with 40,000 miles on the dial and it was using about a quart even 4K miles. I took it to GM one day because there was oil coming out of my throttle body. Turns out the rings were going bad and they replaced the rings and bearings. Now with 55,000 miles, it still knocks but the oil consumption is better.

Mine does it and it drives me crazy. Dealer says it is carbon build up. Wants $190 to let it soak overnight.
And a quart of oil every 3000 miles.

I get a slight diesel sound for a few seconds when cold. Doesn't sound THAT bad though. But maybe next time I bring it for service, I will mention it to them. I have warranty until June 04.

If you read enough on this, there are guys who have had their motors' internals redone by GM under warranty. But I don't think that even that is a permanent fix. It's a part of living with the LS1 for most of us.
