A six speed has either a round ball on top of the shifter, or (in case the Hurst option was checked) an "H" imprinted itn the shifter ****.
The auto has a squarish **** that has a button in the center that you push down to change gears.
Oh, the M6, you have to shift yourself. The automatic shifts for you. But if you have to ask a question like this you should buy a Camaro/Firebird ONLY if it is an automatic. I don't think you'd figure out the whole clutch/ shifting thing anyhow.

number stands for number of gears
therefore in M6 m=manual 6=6 gears
in A4 A=automatic 4=4 gears,
another easy way to know is if you don't have 3 pedals it's an a4
