Going through the jegs magazine and came across these msd blaster coils, looked for information and asked a few people but couldnt get much information on them. Are they worth the money? Do they increase hp any? I havent seen them on any cars or heard anybody talk highly of them.

 

The have had a very high failure rate. Keep your stock coils and invest that money in other parts.

 

Correct these are one OEM piece hard to beat

 

Skip that. Stock coils are plenty, even for a wild build, and they seem to last damn near forever.

 

Nice thread OP, I was wondering about these also. Guess I'll have the $600+ the Blaster Coils cost and put that towards some new rubber!

 

definately not worth the money. these things are junk. my friend with 400 hp bought these things and they suck. my other friend with 900 hp, kept the stock ones. lesson learned: the stock ones are good and no need to spend the money for the MSDs. instead spend your money on some other mods.

 

Thats the common theme.. I have not found anyone who liked them..

well ****.....i just bought their sprark plug wires for when i do my header install...got the 8.5mm super conductors.... hmmm o well i guess

 

their spark plug wires are the best you can buy. It is literally the same wire on 8000hp top fuel drag cars. And i mean THE EXACT SAME WIRE. dont worry about the wires

 

I've heard all the stories that they are prone to failure.....all I can say is I have run them for over 4 years on my 346 motor with excellent results. The engine idles smoother and at lower RPM. The engine gets an additional 1-2 MPG compared to stock coils. I can't speak about addditional HP since I have never put it on a dyno to legitimately compare stock to MSD but the seat of the pants test from off idle to high RPM is definitely crisper.

 

I've run them since 2006 without any issues. I love though how all the guys with a hand full of posts or haven't actually used them always say they're crap. ....carry on.

 

I personally went through 2 sets of them. MSD replaced the first set as 3 died and replaced them one at a time on my own dime. They knew they had issues and I have never heard that they had fixed it.

I tried them on my 412 and the 455. Maybe bigger modified motors eat them up. No idea, mine sucked.

What was stated above is absolutely true. Waste of money and it sucks when you are in the middle of nowhere running on 6 or 7 cylinders and washing down your cylinder to get home.

BTW I have been a member on here a while and have more than one or two posts.

 

MSD makes plenty of good products. The vast majority of my ignition system is MSD on my Gen I SBC car, and it has worked perfect for many years. But it seems that their LS1 coils are very failure prone as compared to the stock coils which rarely seem to fail.

 

Umm actually almost all the ones ive heard saying there crap are people that have ran them themselves and experienced failure or a poor product. I havent ran them but stated that and what ive gathered from other people's experience thats all.

 

Has MSD ever addressed this reliability issue in any forum.

 

LS Round Truck Coils with the Heat Fins are what you need to look for..

 

My current car has these coils (installed by prior owner) and they haven't failed yet. I will replace them with stock if they ever crap out.

 

look into a good stall converter.
