If the alignment is out of specs, it does not necessarily cause any pulling. So, he should take his car to a shop to have the alignment checked out and go from there.
Also, like felton316 said, worn suspension components could also cause tire wear.

Camber will also cause this, but if Its even on both sides and not pulling I would lean towards toe problems. Also IF it happened after an alignment I would seriously doubt the tech screwing up camber on both sides, its easier to belive he set the toe wrong.
