402 build
My first post, my first ls mtr, and I'm learning on the fly. My day was in the 1960's, I'm an old guy. I've built a 402 and am a bit overwhelmed by the dyno results. Used a Comp Cam 212/218 522/529 114 lsa, 317 heads, 10.0 ccr on a forged but basically stock spec stroker short block. All necessary machine work was done and a little hand porting on the heads. It was dynoed with a carb but will be FI when it goes in my truck. Here's what stunned me, 484 hp at 4600 rpm, 549 lbs torque at 3600 rpm, 449 lbs torque at 2500 rpm. Is this common for this type motor? It idles with almost no notice of the cam. Back in the day it took a really warmed over BBC to come up with these nrs. Horse power lives on

Back in the sixties you could look in your rear view mirror at night and tell make and model of the car behind you. Try that tonight on your way home. True dat about the power and technology of current cars, but the cars of the sixties had style.

Sometime later next week, it will be in a 2000 SWB, stepside, Z71. I built this mtr for torque and driveability. The truck weighs 4500lbs so torque was much more important than horse power.

I agree, with a better set of heads and bigger cam, you'll be into the 500's easy. Plus the addition of FI it'll definately be up there with better driveability. I remember reading about Corvettes with a 454 that only pulled 270-275 HP!! (1972-74) Now look at the 427 ci LS9 in the ZR1....bit of a difference lol. Technology is a wonderful thing...sometimes. I still prefer to be able to wrench on my own vehicles but you gotta love the numbers these new cars put out.

What kind of fuel injection system are you using? Do you have a fuel rail that has an injector in every cylinder or are you using a TBI type set up? Also, what intake manifold did the truck have on it?

Basically, I'm replacing a 5.3 with the 402 so I will use the 5.3 intake and and other pieces from it. I am using long tube headers and a true dual exhaust. After I get it done I'll try to put up some pics and a little about how it turned out. I'm 64 and this is the first FI motor I've ever attempted to "soup up". That's why all the questions. I appreciate all replies, thanks.

If you are moving all the 5.3 stuff over you may need some fuel injectors. IIRC the 5.3's are 24lb'ers (unless off a flex fuel motor) so they won't support your power. You can get some Redtops out of the classifieds in the $125 range and they would be perfect.
Don't forget it will need a tune also.
