Default 16 year old + LS1 = ????

This is my first car ever its a 1998 z28 camaro im 16 years old. The car is in mint condition with 100,000 Miles. Engine is tight as can be. Its also a convertible with leather seats and 3.23 gears w/ out traction control. Its a beautiful car but is it a good idea for me to own one as my first car?

How is the performance with the car? I just got it and cannot drive it till i turn 17 and have a job which is in about a month. Also what small upgrades should i do for better performance?

Thanks in advance, Kyle

I got my Z28 when I was 17 and it did get me into a little trouble. I was doing burnouts one time, I lost control and smacked right into a curb. I bent one axle shaft and destroyed two wheels. These are very powerful cars and therefore you have to respect that.

As for mods, I've just started modding my car and just bought Pacesetter headers, a TSP catted Y-pipe and an SLP air lid.

Turning 18 a little later this year and I took delivery of my SS back in April, just graduated from high school this past Tuesday.

My car is bone stock and I daily drive it, but I cannot stress enough and I don't mean to intimidate you or make the car seem like some kind of exotic 800rwhp supercar or something, but if you drive like the average teenager does, you will wreck the car, I can assure you. They are powerful cars for a novice driver and if you don't respect it and you go out there flinging the car around at WOT everywhere like most teenagers would, you will completely ruin it. I know 290-310rwhp doesn't seem like too much but trust me, once you're actually behind the wheel piloting the thing, it feels like a lot, especially to a new driver.

I drive my car like a Grandma, never even accelerate hard enough to past 2500k rpm on the street, 1/4 most of the time and I haven't gotten into any trouble or had any close calls with anything or anyone and I drive it almost everyday. So the best thing I'd say for you to do, is just kind of do it like me, cruise it and enjoy it.

I would say a catback is probably all you need at first, a lot of people don't like loudmouth but I think for you would be the way to go! I have it with longtubes and it's a little too loud, but before the headers it was not TOO loud and sounded mean...what other cars have you driven? It's gonna be a lot different with the z28 lol. Just be careful man if you haven't driven a lot of cars with power.

Just remember, wet road + turn + foot on the gas +no tractor control = you're toast...

But have fun! And be nice to your parents you're pretty lucky!

You won't really care about mods for a little while once you get out there and get some seat time with it, your whole perspective will change. I had some **** planned out for mines before I even got it and I've put it all on layaway for a while. I appreciate and respect my car for what it is at the moment and I'm having a blast with it. Just drive it, be responsible, keep it clean and have fun, starting off, I wouldn't worry too much about mods.

Lucky you bud! I got my 2001 camaro SS when I was 16 also, it wasn't my first car though! Just be easy on it till you got to know the car. As for mods though just put a catback on it and then headers and Y-pipe later on down the road! I hope you enjoy it

16yr old+ls1= 1 wrecked car/100 speed tickets jk. Lid p&p throttle body and a catback are all you need for now. Don't let it become and addiction until the car becomes a toy. A lesson I'm learning right now lol
