This is a common debate. The 10 bolts are weak!!!!! They can break with a STOCK motor A4!!! It's Happened! GET THE UPGRADE!! It's like buying insurance on the car, GET IT!!!

I did my heads and cam leaving the stock 3.42's. I am running the Vindicator cam which is a large cam (240/244). When I first got it, it drove ok but not great. You could feel the torque come in as it rev'd. Took it a while to pull through the gears. I got 4.10's and it runs awesome now. I feel pretty confident that if you choose the right cam that you can get away with keep your 3.42's. I would talk to someone that knows alot about cams. Call Geoff at EPS he can spec you something for your needs.
But if you want something on the bigger side I would still say do the heads and cam first. If you have the money I always think its best to make your bigger purchases first. Then save for your gears after.
I got mine off here from a guy local to me for like $200 bucks. Get yourself a master install kit from a sponsor and throw it in there. If you stay on street tires and drive mindful of your 10 bolt and don't beat it silly (no burnouts or hard launches) you should be ok until you get yourself a 9 inch or S60. Its what i'm doing and so far my rear end is fine.
I know you have a M6 but did not see if you have upgraded your clutch (didn't rear the whole thread so don't flame me if i missed it).

As said depends on the cam. 4.10s will make any setup with a stick feel better. However if you are running a cam in the 23x/23x or bigger its a must unless you are into highway pulls.
