The manual calls for 5.5. I buy 6 qts and have half a bottle left over. That way next time I buy oil I only need to buy 5 qts.
Honestly just drain it all, add it and check the dipstick with 5.5. If it's low add more as needed, but don't do 6 without checking it first. It's not good to put too much oil in there.

Quick question I built a 5.3 with ls1 oil pan and how much oil to add for the initially full . My block is empty at the moment. Fresh rebuild just curious and I'm running a 76mm turbo as well

depends on which filter you use. should be pretty close to the ls1 spec tho somewhere between 5.5 to 6 quarts. if your **** about it start with 5 crank the engine until you show oil pressure then shut it off and adjust till the full mark

LS1 F bodys with a stock pan and filter take 5.5 quarts. The top of the hatch marks mean thats the absolute most oil the engineers wanted in that engine/application. Dead middle of the marks after letting it sit is the actual correct level.

Sorry for reviving this thread... But just incase someone comes across this, well that statement is WRONG.
The top hatch mark is the FULL mark, which is where you wanna be.

5.5 is never enough to reach the "full" mark on any of my LS1s, they've always needed at least 5.75 quarts to show full on the dipstick. Sometimes I fill it to 6.00 and the dipstick shows just a hair over full, I don't use the bigger filter.
This hasn't caused a single problem after 16 years and four different LS1s.
