I'm trying not to spend over $500 on headers if possible.

cats are federally mandated. it doesn't matter what state you're in. it's easier in states that don't have emissions checks......but no matter....get caught without them, and be prepared to nuke your wallet.

Do you mean Headers only or headers and Y pipe???, for budget headers and Y pipe you can get the BBK combo and weld some 2.5" cats, or if You meant headers only I would go with TSP $499 and TSP catted Y pipe.

as long as they don't do a sniff test in VA then you should be fine passing with gutted cats. either way you'll need a tune after the LT's to tune out the rear 02 sensors (which will be throwing codes) and to adjust the air/fuel ratio. you'll be running rich right after they're installed.

i did that for awhile, back in 83-84. that'll at least make them visible, but you can still hear the exhaust hitting in them. kind of an echo.

with todays cats, it's not worth removing them. with the fines if caught, it's even less worth it. it's only a matter of time before they actually start fining people for removing this stuff with the current budget crisis going on......

high flow cats dont rob much power so if youre concerned just go with them.

i had mine gutted only because a shitty tune ruined them.

In NC if your inspection is good no one gives it a second glance, I have only heard of guys on Harley's getting dinged for it. I don't even think that is emissions related just noise control.

they do here in nj too. i used to be one of them as previously mentioned. but also here in nj, they've been deploying mobile inspection stations, complete with computer hook ups, and tail pipe sniffers. the sniffer WILL tell them that there's no cat, even if they don't look.
to me, it's just not worth the risk, especially with todays technology, and high flow cats......what're ya gonna gain? .00125 of a second in the quarter?

now, since there's some on this board that think i just like to argue....and sometimes i do.....and that i just like to troll, blablabla.......i'm not. i'm just offering advice, and my opinion.
it is absolutely not worth the risk of them trying to impound my car(worst case) or slap me with a huge assed fine, just because i want to be cool and take the cats out.
oh yea....and fords rule, chevys suck. that should cover all the bases for my ankle humper.

+1. In NC they don't give a **** as long as you've passed your inspection lol.

If the cats are clogged then gutting them can make a noticeable difference, but I agree the typical hp gain going to from a clean cats to no cats is pretty negligible. you'll definitely make more volume though and your car will smell great
