Default Question on an auto's rpm/speed ratio

Hey guys,

I'm looking at buying an auto 01 t/a and I'm going to try to figure what kind of rear end is on it but need some help.

What kind of rpm is a stock car suppose to be running at when you're going about 70? (I'll be test driving later so I don't know what its running right now)

Again this is a auto, thanks in advance.

I run about 1800 rpm or so at 70, IIRC, but I have 2.73's. More than likely the TA will have 3.23's, so it'll be a little higher.

Sounds about right. I believe it has 3.23's and it was running about 2k at 70.

Also, I decided to purchase it so come Thursday I'll officially have a Trans Am. I've always wanted one since I watched Smokey and the Bandit with my dad some years ago. (I'm 24)

Had a 92 base bird (hence the name) and fixed it up and got rid of it a couple weeks ago. Can't wait to start making this one my own!

At 70 I'm right at about 2100 RPM or so, is it a T/A and not a T/A WS6? If it is a T/A, there is one sure way to check if you have the 3.23's, check the door for the GU5 axle code.

It's a base T/A. The car has been repainted and they wiped the door clean during the job I'm assuming. (I was unhappy about that)

I have a T/A and at 65mph I'm at 2200rpm's with my 3.23's.

Chalk the drive shaft, easy and takes a few minutes. Converter wont factor in. Yes, you can est on driving but I like sometimes old school.

OR check the RPO code if you suspect its original. 3.23 will show first gear selection. 2.73's does not.

Figure I'd throw something different out there.

http://www.f-body.org/gears/ click on "1998 A4" and "calculate." Then revise the rear end ratio to 2.73 and compare and it should be clear what you have.
