Default '02 WS6 Fuel Tank Capacity?

I know the standard size for the fuel tank for this year is 16.8 gallons, which leads me to believe my fuel gauge is wrong. Is this a common problem with these cars? I know when I had my Firebird ('96) the fuel gauge wasn't very accurate, but I just want to make sure I'm not going crazy here. I usually fill up between 1/4 tank and E, and the most I've ever put in the car is 12 gallons. Are the odds better than my fuel gauge is off, or that the car has a smaller tank in it?

Even when the gauge hits "E", most cars still have a few gallons left. This is normal. You could probably drive for another ~40 miles when you first hit E and not run out of fuel, depending on conditions and what sort of MPG you get.

Other than fuel cells for race cars, I don't think anyone even makes a smaller gas tank for 4th gens, so I'm sure your car has the stock tank. '93-'98 cars got a 15.5 gallon tank, but it's metal (yours should be black plastic, like all '99-'02 cars) so you can just look at it and see if it's correct for your year.

Thanks for the explanation RPM WS6. The one time when I filled it with 12.2 gallons, it was pretty much on E. I was expecting to put a lot more in, but that was all it took. I guess I'll just have to get used to filling at around 12 gallons, at least that is what I usually use in a week.

The first time i went to go fill up when my gauge was close to E i was expecting to put 14-15 gallons in her but just like you it was only 12.

Same here, 300 miles a week for the past 10 years... Everytime I fill it's 12.x gallons... One time I let it get below the E and filled with 13.x

No idea why but I try not to let it get past the E.

Same here. I put it 60$ the other day at 4.30 a gallon and it was below E.... I asked for 70 but it cut off at 59.50 and I coaxed a little more out of the pump.

Mine would stay pegged at full until about 200 miles then it was almost like you could see it go down. Most I ever put was 12 gallons as well
