Default Limit of the 98 LS1

so i went to the darkside of LS motors persay and got a 98. i wanted an 01-02 to replace my 2000 but this one has a few mods done and low miles along with the holy grail of Daily Driver clutch setups (tick master and monster level 2)
It came with an SLP 234/228 .576.571 113lsa cam brand new but im not sure if i want to use it or not. i kinda want something more along the lines of a Polluter or Mayhem II cam and get around 400rwhp

what are the limits of the 98 as far as hp and nitrous applications and what do i absolutely need to give attention and update to do a cam.. I was going to swap out the 806 perimeter bolt heads with some 5.3 truck heads but was told they would be a waste of time and money (head gaskets lifters ect when swapping)
Im going to use an upgraded oil pump and ls2 timing chain so dont bother mentioning the obvious. just wondering if theres any achilles heel in the 98 i should look into swapping.

Are you asking if there are major differences between the '98 LS engine and the succeeding years? The few differences there are will be canceled by your planned 'mods anyway, so it should be fine. The only major difference I know about which has caused some people problems is the PCM programming/tuning...

Can you make that with the stock heads and bolt-ons?

well i have the EPIC sweing machine issue that plagues LS cars... soo a Comp Cams Trunion upgrade is in the works so that i dont have to listen to tick tick tick tick tick with the rpms lol. it has a noisy valvetrain that bugs me so im going to fix that. and fix some suspension stuff first. once i collect some parts then ill look into a cam setup.. i might even just put a 100 shot on it for now and build up a 6.0 for it.

and a polluter cam, 1 7/8 longtubes, ory, ported tbody and 5.3 truck heads (11.0:1 compression would put it over 400

The trunion upgrade is a great longevity mod, but you're mistaken that it will fix the ticking. You might want to investigate your pushrod length and preload.

i pushed my 98 z28 to 552rwhp. i put 317's on it, arp rod bolts and 12lb of boost thru a custom TT setup. got cold one february night and boosted 16 or17lbs. cracked a piston. still put over 1k miles on it after that happened tho. from my experience 98s arent as bad as people make them out to be.

i can assure you my pushrod length is fine. its a bone stock LS1 thats never had the cover off. my last car did this till i did the Trunion upgrade. i had a few rockers that had worked their way loose and were making some racket. ill prolly check for bent pushrods as that sounds moderatly possible as well as exhaust leaks.

its 86k miles so its doubtful that i have a failed lifter already
