Default Question on T56 swaps

Can someone give me some good learning threads so I can learn to do this more easily I know there are threads showing how to do it. I know about 80% of the parts in a car but the specific under the hood parts and deep internals I know nothing about or how to remove them.

I have a 02' T/A 4 speed I want to convert it into a T56 6 speed. My car is worth $13,000 +/- and is on loan for $15,000 Im 20 and make about a $1000 a month since I just entered the military a year ago. Obviously my budget is tight so I need to know if it is worth converting this car to a 6 speed or will it be too much off pain and a money pit. I plan on going to junkyards for the transmission and the big rugged parts. What should I buy at the junkyard? What should I buy new? I might buy my buddies dead 97' T/A T56 and internals, will that work with a 2002?

I havent done the swap myself but for starters you will need the transmission , clutch kit , all the hydraulics ( master/slave cyl ,lines ) clutch pedal/linkage

and change the tune to reflect the manual.

chances are your car has 273 gears , maybe 323's whereas M6 came with 342's. cant imagine 323's would pose any real issue other than 6th would be useless until about 75-80 on a flat highway but 273's I dont think you would find any legal time to put it in 6th - I bet it would buck and heave at 90 due to low rpm lol

rock the auto for now, t56 will be a costly upgrade if you dont do the swap yourself... mui

And since you are in the military, where would you store the bulky t56? I highly doubt they will let you store that thing at ur barracks since they inspect rooms during field days...

Alot of info in this thread:

I have personally used this thread to complete a t56 swap one of my own personal cars, sounds tough, but at a slow pace I still completed in a weekend.

I swapped my camaro over to a 6.0 living in the barracks. I did it all in a storage unit, lol. I would suggest using the skill center on post. If you get all the parts you need, you could swap it in a weekend. The skill center will have all the tools you need. where are you stationed at?

I have 273s with a T56. 1500 RPM @ 70 MPH in 6th!

pretty sure you're wrong there bud. I have 3.42's in my car and i spin 1500 at 70 or around 1750 at 80. with 2.73's and a 26" tire you'd be around 85 at 1500....

But to answer the op's question. You will need a new clutch, m/c, crossmember, shifter, torque arm mount, small wiring connectors, m6 center console and some basic hand tools to complete the swap. Also not that the lt1 t56 will not work with an ls1 without changing the front plate, bellhousing and input shaft. this alone is around 600 in parts so if you get the tranny for free its worth it but if not find an ls1 t56.
