ok...my parents...like takin my car fro rides lol...and since im only 16 and always at football and running round to work...i take my moms car
they put in 87 octane...and i have since i owned the car since that is all i was able to afford....i mean yeah a few 92 octane fill ups here and there....but now i want to start 92 octance only!!so....how is the best way to go bout this cuz i want the tank to only have 92...and i don feel like removing anything or nuttin...so would it be ok to run the car down to just about E on 87 then fill her up....or is it aight to do the premium fill ups at any amount...will the fuel mix 2gether...will one sit on the top...will one go away faster....i dont understand the whole gasoiline thing lol....so if someone could tell me the following
-the best way to go bout this
-if the fuels mix
-if not say i had 1/2 tanik of 87 then filled up the other 1/2 with 92 which would go away faster...would the 92 sit on top of the 87?
-other ideas?
sorry bout the lenght

the octane rating on gasoline is meant to tell you how fast the gasoline will detonate (as in explode before the spark plug fires, purely from the compression of the engine, the way a diesel engine is designed to run). a higher compression engine needs higher octane gasoline to run correctly...on a modern car, using too low an octane will cause the computer to pull a whole bunch of timing out of the car so the fuel doesnt detonate (or knock). if the computer can't pull out enough timing to stop detonation, you can seriously damage the motor by beating on the car with lower octane gas in it.
anything with a compression ratio over 9 or 9.5:1 or so needs premium gas to run at full potential....the LS1 has a compression ratio of a little over 10:1 so high octane is a must for the motor to run under full spark advance.
your post was a little confusing, are you saying you're parents and/or you have been filling your WS6 with 87 octane???? if so, you're not getting the full fun of the LS1!!! personally i put 87 in my Z ONE TIME and i'll never do it again...it ran like crap and accelerated at around 3/4 of its potential. these engines are recommended to run on 91 or better (here premium is 93).
if you can possibly afford it always put premium gas in...mixing different octanes is not a problem in my experience. just start filling up with the good stuff and enjoy....eventually you will clear all the 87 out but if you want to do it all at once just run the car down to fumes (don't beat on it if you can help it) and refill with premium (you may want to replace the fuel filter when you do this since sometimes, running the car down to the bottom of the tank can stir up sediment lying in the tank.( seeing as yours is an 02, i don't think it would be much of a problem but for the best running engine, you might want to do it anyway.)
if by some chance i misunderstood and you were talking about putting 92 in some other car that is rated for 87, dont bother.....it is a common misconception that running higher octane gas than necessary in a healthy engine improves performance. all it does is slow the burn rate of the fuel and can actually make performance worse..
hope this answers your question. good luck.

thats exactly what i needed....so basically jsut run the premium always...and then the 87 will just eventually get used up?....would it go over time...or would it go b4 any of the premium would? if that makes sense
One octane does not "sit" under or on top of another octane. The two will mix and you would essentially have 89 octane sitting in your tank. Just run the car down to a 1/16th of a tank and fill it up with 92 (or 93 if it's available) and you'll be set.
