If it's just sitting not being started, I would leave it alone. If you start it occasionally where the oil can get condensation from not getting hot enough, then you may want to dump it just to be safe.

my opinion is different from many of my friends as well as this msg board. i change my oil only once a year in the spring. drive aprox 2500 miles over the summer then during the winter start up once a month running it for upto 30 min. i believe full synthetic oil is very good. a mechanic friend has told me acid builds up by doing that which i dont believe. each to his own. i've had my car 10 years and its running fine. 70?/72k miles on it.

I generally change mine only once per year (M1 0W40), either in the fall or in the spring depending on the car. In fact, I have sometimes gone two years between changes with the '98, since I often only drive it ~300 miles per year, and I don't idle the engine during the winter or ever do short trips with it (those things cause much more contamination in the oil and wear on the engine than just leaving it sit during storage).

I have always changed mine just before winter storage using Mobil 1. I usually do not have to start it for that 90 day period while it sits over winter and then run it all year on that oil since I only put 1500-3000 miles a year on any of the toy cars I have owned over the years. Never had an issue and I have been doing that for over 20 years with a bunch of different car I have owned.

Just be sure that when you do start it in the Spring, that it isn't just a quick run to the store.
Get the full engine and exhaust warmed up. Drive it for at least an hour and any moisture should be driven out.

I change mine before it's taken out in the spring. I don't turn the key even to accsesory when its in storage since late Oct welcome to Minesota it's a REAL BUMMER just have battery tender on it. What I do seeing its been dripping down for that long accept which mite be laying in valleys or what ever I put it in neutral push it out and drain I don't want all that which was setting in the pan back up again. Been working for me. I took the advice of my son in law at TPIS don't crank them up unless you can get them up to temp and it don't happen up here.- 20 to +20 and all the salt on the roads. That's it for my idea.

I haven't changed mine in either car in 2 years. They have only been driven maybe 50 miles total between the two over that time. When I do start one I drive it for a while before turning it off.
I plan on changing it this spring even though they both still show clear oil on the stick.

I guess "cheap insurance" depends on what you consider to be insurance vs. overkill. For me, dumping the oil in my garage queen every 3 months would be an expensive bad habit, since that would amount to about ~150 miles per change in the summer and ~0 miles per change in the winter.

I would change the oil before turning the engine over. You can get condensation inside the engine due to temp changes and humidity.
Not sure what part of the country you are in but why take a chance?
Good Luck.

I have done 1 oil change each year since I've gotten the car (2 years), and that has been in the spring. It sits all winter without starting for the reasons RPM WS6 said, plus it is rather unhappy starting in the cold.
