That usually means you have a code in the computer that needs to be read and interpreted. Should point you to a problem or a sensor reading out of spec which might point to a problem. Some vehicles will do this at certain maintenance intervals(mileage) to encourage you to perform certain maintenance tasks. AutoZone will read them for you for free if you don't have a scanner.

Service Engine Soon (SES) is the specific term used for LS1 F-bodies (as well as some other vehicles) to represent a MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp). This type of MIL can only be illuminated for an emissions related fault/fault that creates an increase in emissions levels (Type A or B DTC) and not to indicate any sort of mileage-based standard maintenance intervals.
These cars also have a "Service Vehicle" light (as well as a "change oil" light on later model years) that doesn't directly indicate an emissions related fault.
