Found a 5.3 out of a 2004 z71on Craigslist with 146xxx on it- complete- intake to pan with all accessories, headers etc. got the price down to 400 bucks but deciding if I should go ahead and get it. Any input? Is this a good deal for this engine?

That sounds like a good deal to me if you trust that it ran previously. How exactly was the ECM "broken?" Was that due to the wreck? Always harder to buy a motor that you can't hear run.

I'm not really sure but it does look like the truck was in a pretty bad wreck.

Well you'll need a PCM anyway, right? Maybe you could take one over there and start it up? Otherwise a little bit of a risk. At $400 even if the bottom end needed work you could part out the rest and get most or all of your money back. I'd buy it for that price.

You could drain the oil and/or cut the filter open and see if you see anything truly alarming. It's not a sure thing but better than blind. Make sure it turns over by hand.

Where is the PCM on the trucks? If not in an area that was damaged in the wreck, I would be suspicious.
