Default motor question

Picked this 4.8 up for free, it looks like water was sitting in the cylinder. It does have rust and a little gouge in the wall, the piston does have pitting. I was wondering if the block is savable

4.8/5.3 iron block can be bored all the way to LS1 stock bore size. Boring all that way, you would most likely take that gouge and such out. But you can do the math; subtract 5.7 bore from 4.8/5.3 bore and divide by two. If that number is equal to or greater than the depth of the gouge, this is an option. If not, you are looking at sleeves and the block is likely not worth it. You would need bigger pistons but a nice budget way to go would be to have the block bored, find some good used LS1 size pistons, slap it back together(assuming cyls is only damage) and you'll end up with about a 5.1 with a short stroke.

Good luck
