Default DTC U1000 and U1096 on 2000 Camaro SS

Has a couple times now where my gauges and dash lights would go crazy, then start working normal. Other side effect from this is while the lights are going crazy, it feels like the brakes are being applied for a split second - maybe ABS system? Anyway, connected to the OBD port and scanned to get U1000 and U1096. Correct me if I am wrong, but the U1000 seems to be generic comm error and will probably go away once the U1096 is corrected. So on to the U1096 error - this indicates a Lost communication with Instrument cluster.

I am going through the manuals and checking other forums for info, but wanted to get a thread started in case anyone has info on this problem.

Car is 2000 Camaro SS, pretty much stock - no changes since purchased - single owner.
