Default Potential Nitrous Damage

I found an 02 Z28 at a local dealer and unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your point of view), the previous owner took off the power steering pump and ran nitrous on the engine. I'm currently haggling with the dealer, and if he comes down on the price enough, I'll probably buy it. I'm willing to accept the risk of a previously nitrous-ed engine, but I'm not totally clear on what kind of damage I should be looking out for. Like if I tore down the engine, what should I be most watchful for? Piston/rod cracks? Head gasket damage?

I don't think so, it's through a dealer. I can try asking, but I doubt they'll give out customer info.

Unless you get a smoking deal I'd consider passing on this. I'd never buy a car that ran nitrous without knowing the owner and it's history. That's just me though. It's not that nitrous is bad in itself, it's that some people try and skimp out on doing it the right way sometimes, and not knowing any of the details in that area just wouldn't sit well with me

Fair enough. The dealer doesn't seem to want to budge anyway, I was just curious about the failure modes that nitrous can cause.

i would think excessive blow by would be an indicator of nitrous damage.

Definitely dont just pass...run! a whole lot of issues could arrise, anything from valve guide issues, burnt valve, melted piston or cracked, f-ed low end bearings from too much 'hit', if it encountered a lean condition it could've started to melt the top ring land and smashed the rings, the list goes on and on. You'd be better off just knowing the motor is cooked in my opinion.

If it were to be a play only car and you dont care if the motor craps out in a few months then the first step is a compression test and seeing if there is a aftermarket fuel system or pump etc to see if it was a wet or dry kit. secondly would be to have an oil analysis sent out to try and *predict* (nothing is even close to for sure) bearing issues. imo those would be your first steps if you're going to do it. - Just say you want to take the car to a mechanic to have it checked out, take it home and start diagnostics
