Nothing wrong with changing the filter first, just in case it's blocked and that solves the problem. But I would plan on having to replace the pump as well. The regulator is part of the pump assembly, it's all in the tank.

I thought the regulator was in the middle of the fuel rail?

this is a common misconception

your actual fuel pressure regulator is in the tank on top of the fuel pump itself.

The regulator was on the rail for the LT1, but as stated, not the LS1.

there is an alternative to dropping the tank , search trap door mod.

Basically it involves cutting out the metal above the tank then adding an access plate to cover the hole like what w bodies have. I wouldn't do it on a collectible low miles high value car but my m6 car in my sig already has it done and any of my others would get the same , once its done fuel pump access is easy.

Honestly, even in this case I would and will if I ever have to. It's not something that would ever be visible, nor is it harmful to chassis integrity. Some cars have these access panels from the factory as you mentioned. IMO, doing this mod is just correcting a factory oversight (sort of like drilling access holes to remove the rivets for power window motor replacement.) The factory put cut provisions in the rear carpet for access to the shocks, and they should have done something for the pump as well.

Mine is a 17k mile 97-point show quality car, but I would/will still do the access panel as it should have been done from the factory and won't be visible once complete.

The regulator is part of the assembly/module, and it's included if you buy a new complete assembly/module. If you buy a "pump only" you won't get this part, and you'd have to reuse the rest of the factory module.

Dont drop the tank, just cut the top, do a search there a google video. I done it and it saved me big time, bc now I have to change the sending unit also. If you get a fuel pump just get the racetronix with the hotwire kit also.

your more than welcome to drop the tank. However I will bet $100 you will hate your life about halfway through, probably right about the time your halfway done with dropping the rear axle.

do the trap door, seriously youll forget its there and its no big deal at all.

your call though.

your stock fuel rails will not be a restriction on any setup with a 255 pump
