The Air Injection Regulator (AIR) does nothing more than inject fresh air into the exhaust streams during startup and warmup in order to diffuse the fuel-enrichened exhaust gases, thereby diluting the tailpipe emissions. EPA-mandated, they are used to help CA-bound cars pass the stricter emissions laws there and elsewhere. Removing it won't affect performance, but it'll clean up the engine bay and lighten the front end by about 15 pounds.

Just out of curiousity, does anybody know why the GTO doesn't have the AIR system? I'm assuming they found another way to pass the emissions in CA - just wondering if anybody knows what it is (tuning maybe)?

I believe it had to do with the cam change in the 2001 and up LS1 engines.
