Here, I'll explain:
Drill bits and screws are designed to be turned clockwise because your right hand offers more strength turning that direction. These tools existed long before the motors that powered them, so obviously these motors needed to be designed to use these pre-existing tools.
There are a few exceptions of car engines that spin the wrong way, but generally you can expect every engine to be able to drill a hole with a normal drill bit if you stuck one on the output of it.
A Boat, Twin Engines, use BOTH rotation directions "one counter" engine AND the other "standard" in many cases.
The early inventors may have observed a clock or a sun dial.
