in 1998 when the fbods got the LS1 it was rated at 305 but unlike the previous ratings with the LT1 the LS1 numbers were very underrated and many cars saw most of those numbers on the dyno..
in 2001-2002 the car has had a host of changes like the LS6 intake as standard, the 28lb injectors that were on the 1998's returned and the clutch for the 6 speed units is the same as a Z06's.. the power many 2001-2002's put down was impressive and whilethe factory only claimed 310 (5hp increase) many were putting down that much or more bone stock.
(my 2002 has put down 318rwhp/337rwtq bone stock.. not one mod)
as for the TA vs Z28 its all up to you.. many state that the TA will weigh more but thats not by much.. choose which ever you personally like the most.

psychocabbage is right, choose on what you think looks best. The weight of the T/A is slightly greater due to the wing/ground effects/ etc. If you don't like the wing or want leather look for a Formula, that is if you like the looks of the Bird over the camaro. Do some ebay searching, check the vehicle classifieds here, and autotrader, and several others. You'll find there are several 98-00s in the 8-10 range. they may be around 75+k miles..

it all depends on what your overall plan is? as most of us already know the ls1 is the **** , but dont count out the LT1 out just yet. the car is cheaper, mods are cheaper, and they can be made equally fast. i would suggest research both and pick the one that better suites your application. i planned on getting a 97 formula before i even knew what an ls1 was, but after researching and looking at prices i decided to wait and save up a bit more and i opted for the ls1. the ws6 that i had wanted didnt pan out , but never the less i still ended up with the 346
you can click on the ls1info link in my sig to to start on your research. alsos check here as well. i'd also cruise through the lt1 forum here and check out camaroz28.com as well. that way you can figure out the pro's and cons on both cars.

Not only do the LS1's run much better comparing stock to stock, they are not plagued with the nightmarish optisparks the LT1's had. Ask me how I know - I've owned 94 and 00 Formulas. That being said, 94-5 cars can be picked up nowadays in the $4-5000 range.

Yeah, I'd say not having an opti to worry about is the number one advantage of LS1 ownership. That, and having like an extra 70 hp stock would be a nice advantage as well...
But I wouldn't trade my headlamps for the newer style lamps for any amount of money

i know they all said this already, but save for a ls1 even if it does have a little higher mileage. I myself have a 98, and I had always said I wanted a LT1 because mods are cheaper. I didnt know much then. Luckily I came across the car I own now, and I got a good price on. I never had the privelidge of knowing how much faster, more relialable, longer lasting, and more powerful, plus more state of the art, the LS1's are compared to the LT1's.
You can also look at it this way... Either one (LS1 or LT1) in good shape should beat a stock GT stang all the way through 2004. It'll be close with an LT1 though.
The most important thing to do, is to have patientce. You'll find the right car (hopefully a LS1), believe me, I KNOW its HARD to WAIT, but you'll be glad you did when you pull up to a LT1 and beat him by 5-6 car lengths bone stock, while he has modded exhaust.
Good luck either way! let us know what ya get!

But I could probably learn to appreciate the 98+ styling if it meant trading up to LS1 power!
