I love my 98. Only issues with it is the gear in the headlights stripping out but, thats a Trans Am issue not a 98 issue. I drive the hell out of it with 83,000 miles and it just ask for more and more. Nice that I can scare the hell out of my buddy with a fox body 5.0 that has a pleny of mods with my stock TA. He still wont sit beside me

I could be talking out of my butt, but I think I read that the transmissions and rear-ends were different (in a good way). They are a quirky year model because of knock sensor issues (sensitive), and other problems, but I think they are really one of the better year models because of the injectors and all. The only major disadvantage I see is the EGR/LS1 intake manifold.

my 98 had 34000 miles last summer when I bought it, now it has 38000 and the freekin' tranny crapped out, no nitro, no headers, no nothing! I don't know what the first owner did to it, but it should have lived past 38000. My hatch closes fine, runs stronger than my friends identical car, so I believe the 1-5 cam thing. The AIR system sux *****, it's loud and distractive. normally when a car makes a noise like that, something is broke!

The 98's had the Borg Werner (sp?) t56 which was stronger than the Tremec t56 which came in the later years

The 98's have an Auburn rear end, only year. However I burnt mine up at 32,000 miles and its a one tire fire for the most part now. I have an Auburn Pro series unit waiting to go in.

GM did have a warranty prob on the oil pumps on 98's but that was the only real issue and the pumps were different on '99 up. lotta later models got LS6 goodies , would be the better way to go if you can afford it.
