There must have been something wrong with your car, that or the carpet was limiting the throttle pedal. I've taken my STOCK 99 Z28 upto the red line in 3rd several times (5500rpm). It's an A4 with 2.73 gears. According to the calculator thats 154mph, which is about what the speedo was showing also. It does this with relative ease.

I have taken mine up to 7000 RPM in 5th with the stock 3.42 gears. Should be close to that 200mph mark.

I've had several LS1 Camaros past what the speedo reads. Don't know how fast I was going but I bounced it off the rev limiter in 5th and in the autos ran it till 6000rpms in 4th. Again, no idea how fast I was going but I was getting it, lol.

what gears do have in the auto?

Because running regular sized tyres 6000rpm in 4th would be:
2.73 = 240mph
3.23 = 202mph
3.73 = 175mph
4.10 = 160mph

Definatley tapped the speed limited at 162mph bone stock, in oklahoma, on route 62, between altus, and lawton. Tapped speed limiter and 5th, shifted to 6th, and cruised at 150ish for a minute or two, and the rpm's aren't even that high. Bone stock M6, with 3.42's. It was moving, real fast. Could never do that around here. Wonder what I can do now. BTW, spraying in 6th, is a death wish. I don't care what clutch, or motor combo you have, it's not made to work like that.

I know mine's not stock, but I raced my buddy on his 2003 Hyabusa and I was about a car and a half ahead of him, my speedo was pegged but he said his read 188 and still pulling. This was spraying in 5th...

Dude, I wouldn't recommend spraying in 6th, that's WAYYY too much stress on the car. Not just the bottom end (which will most likely melt away into nothing) but the tranny and rear end. The driveshaft will be hauling some serious *** and will probably break too.

But good luck though, and get it on tape.

Darwin Awards -- 1995. Be sure to make a video or "hold my beer and watch this" as they say....

The Arizona Highway Patrol were mystified when they came upon a pile of smoldering wreckage embedded in the side of a cliff rising above the road at the apex of a curve. The metal debris resembled the site of an airplane crash, but it turned out to be the vaporized remains of an automobile. The make of the vehicle was unidentifiable at the scene.

The folks in the lab finally figured out what it was, and pieced together the events that led up to its demise.

It seems that a former Air Force sergeant had somehow got hold of a JATO (Jet Assisted Take-Off) unit. JATO units are solid fuel rockets used to give heavy military transport airplanes an extra push for take-off from short airfields.

Dried desert lakebeds are the location of choice for breaking the world ground vehicle speed record. The sergeant took the JATO unit into the Arizona desert and found a long, straight stretch of road. He attached the JATO unit to his car, jumped in, accelerated to a high speed, and fired off the rocket.

The facts, as best as could be determined, are as follows:

The operator was driving a 1967 Chevy Impala. He ignited the JATO unit approximately 3.9 miles from the crash site. This was established by the location of a prominently scorched and melted strip of asphalt. The vehicle quickly reached a speed of between 250 and 300 mph and continued at that speed, under full power, for an additional 20-25 seconds. The soon-to-be pilot experienced G-forces usually reserved for dog-fighting F-14 jocks under full afterburners.

The Chevy remained on the straight highway for approximately 2.6 miles (15-20 seconds) before the driver applied the brakes, completely melting them, blowing the tires, and leaving thick rubber marks on the road surface. The vehicle then became airborne for an additional 1.3 miles, impacted the cliff face at a height of 125 feet, and left a blackened crater 3 feet deep in the rock.

Most of the driver's remains were not recovered; however, small fragments of bone, teeth, and hair were extracted from the crater, and fingernail and bone shards were removed from a piece of debris believed to be a portion of the steering wheel.
Ironically a still-legible bumper sticker was found, reading
"How do you like my driving? Dial 1-800-EAT-****."

yeah mythbusters confirmed it to be BS, they figured it would take 4-5 jato's to get the car going as fast as the myth states

I've been clocked by a state tropper going 140mph... and ticketed ... With 3.73's in the rear, I probably would not of made it to the 162 limit, without being on the rev limiter. I was turing a good 5,200 rpm at 140. There is definitly more speed in the car and its basically stock, and i belive with 3.42 gear, shuting it down at the hundred and sixty whatever limiter would not be hard.

i do have another question tho- this is about a rattling noise under the motor- 1 out of 7 times the car drives perfect without making the noise when i give it the gas but then other times it rattlers just sitting in the drive or giving it the gas....any idea of what it could be??

First let me say : Holy ****. someone arrest this guy for grave robbing.

Second: ANYONE that has had thier stock bottom end car to 7000 in fifth LET ALONE 6th if full of the brown stinkey stuff. NO IN A FROZEN OVER HELL it would happen. EVEN IF your bottom end doesnt scatter itself all over the freaking place your tires would one with the tire gods. I dont even want to get into what would happen to your trans or diff.

900hp purpose built ORR cars cant even hit the kind of speeds your talking about in 6th gear. The world fastest man on a public highway has only been clocked at 227mph. And that was in mega hp, aero'd C4 vette.

Last summer in Chicago in the middle of the night some psycho on a motorcycle was radared at 246mph on of all roadways Lake Shore Drive. That's right in the heart of the city! The cops didn't try to catch him but did set up a road block where LSD ends on the north side. The guy tried to turn around and go back the way he came but his bike ran out of gas about a half mile south of the roadblock!! I have no idea what kind of bike he was riding but 240+ on a public road in the city is as crazy as I've ever heard of. Maybe PSJ or Horist remembers hearing about it.

I think going the speeds you guys are talking about on public roads is pretty dumb, you have to time to react. I've done it ONCE and will never ever do it again unless its a closed course, not worth it IMO.
