Default Fuel Mileage and Fuels (link)

I was reading this site looking for information about whether it would be more economical to run 87 octane rather than 91 in my LS1:
http://www.chevron.com/prodserv/fuel.../fuel_economy/
and it mentions how the ecu will retard the spark to eliminate knock/detonation/ping/whatever u wanna call it, but it didn't say if it would be a large reduction in fuel economy by the retarded timing. Anybody know?

It has always been my understanding that if the vehicle has a largely retarded motor, that it isn't running to it's fullest ability and therefor isn't running effeciently. Granted this can be different with blown cars, but in your case the LS1 should be run at a good advance to optimime not only performance, but fuel burn efficency when the piston reaches top dead. Just a thought....but my guess is that you will run better with more mileage on the premium for that reason.
